The meeting began at 17:05 and 10 members were present

1. Introductions

2. The minutes at GLOBECOM'97 were approved.

3. TPR reports

A. ICC'98: 553 papers were received, SPCE handled 37 papers and sponsored one tutorial, SPCE sole organiser of one session, co-sponsor of 4 sessions.

B. GLOBECOM'98: Jaafar Elmirghani reported 4-5 sessions SPCE sole sponsor. Two tutorial proposals.

C. ISPACS'98: Naohisa Ohta reported that it is the week before            GLOBECOM'98, in Australia, deadline extended to July 6, 98, members encouraged to submit.

D. ISCSDSP'98: Technical cosponsorship, UK, April 1998, 155 delegates, 210 papers, 158 accepted, 145
presented, plan to hold this event once every tow years.

E. MELECON'98:160 delegates, wide range of areas.

F. ICIN'98: SPCE to sponsor, no further details, Trevor reported.

G. ICDSPA: Initiative by Comsoc in Russia, members invited to go, SPCE to sponsor, no further details, Trevor reported.

H. ATM'98: Chairs action, SPCE to sponsor, May 26-29, 1998.

I. MILCOM'98: Stuart Farquhar and Ron Smith selected to represent SPCE.

J. ICC'99: Tomo Taniguchi to represent SPCE.

K. GLOBECOM'99: Ron Smith to represent SPCE.

L. ISPACS'99: Naohisa called for participation.

M. IEEE WCNC: Members of requested SPCE contribution, Horst Bessai and John Stonick volunteered.

Error concealment for ATM, speech and video, High security communication, Smart antennas for wireless, Intelligent control of ATM, VLSI in communication, Wavelets in Communication, voice for ATM, Blind equalisation, synchronisation, OFDM.

5. Tutorial proposals:

8. SPCE current committee voted in at GLOBECOM'96.
Two year term. Nominations made and the following were elected:

• Naohisa Ohta Elected for Chair
• Jaafar Elmirghani Elected for vice chair
• Ron Smith Elected for Secretary

9. AOB: Members thanked Trevor Clarkson the previous SPCE chair.
