Joan is descended from Henry Hurst (#6
England page). Two of his sons, William "Brindle Bill" Hurst and John
Hurst are both ggreat -fathers in her line, as distant cousins
married and the lines crossed. Her children are also related on their father's side,
as one of his relatives (Burleson) married another Hurst cousin. (They find this
very amusing!). I have been doing family history research actively for over 25
years, however, my introduction came many years earlier, at age 11 when I filled out my
first pedigree chart and subsequently began typing family group sheets for my maternal
grandmother on a little portable typewriter. Little did I know from those humble
beginnings where this all would lead. How marvelous it truly is and has come to this
point where we are able to share and meet one another via modern technology!
Much of this information was researched
by J.C. Hurst in his book "The Hursts of Shenandoah"
and "Hurst and Allied Families" by John Simeon Hurst, Jr. However, recently
I have read much newer research and present some of this information courtesy of June Reed
on my England page. In addition, various record sources including familysearch.org of the
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormons).
Lastly, personal research over 40 years, by your editor, includes census records, letters,
books, family bibles, court records, etc. There are many other books out there, I
recently discovered some more in a recent trip to Salt Lake City and others which are on
my "to read" list. I hope that you will share your personal favorite with
me, so that we may all benefit!
We begin in England
with our name. The name of Hurst means a wood or thicket, or the place in the
woods. Notice the top of our crest which is a tree. The name Hurst has various
spellings..ie ..Hyrste ,
Hirste , Hyrst , Hurse , Hurste and Hearst, to name a few.
It appears the first Hurst in America was one Tobias Hurst, who immigrated
from England to Elizabeth City, Virginia, in 1608 at age 22. Jerry Stout has Tobias Hurst
genealogy on her web page (found on the links page) .
There are several mentions of other Hursts in America,
however, I have not done extensive research into this area, so I have relied on many
others and begin with Richard Hurst born in 1515 in Oxfordshire ,
England. However, in January 1999, June Reed posted new information on our England
Hurst's.
