About Us
A brief (biased and selective) history of time:
Paul Cacolice completed his
B.S.E. in Health Education
with an emphasis on Athletic Training
from Slippery Rock University
(PA) and gained an Athletic Trainer Certification
(A.T.,C.) to prevent, care, manage and rehabilitate athletic injuries
in 1986. He then completed two years of post-graduate work in Exercise Science at the
University of Massachusetts at Amherst while also working as the Athletic Trainer to the
primary women's athletic teams on campus. After his time in the Berkshires, he moved to
the Division I athletes at the University of Maryland-Baltimore County as the assistant
athletic trainer while also responsible for instruction of a Health and Wellness class.
The unique curriculum was ranked very highly that year by the student guide to instructors
and classes at this Honors University.
Paul moved back to New England and took positions in physical therapy clinics for the next
11 years with treatment responsibilities and game coverage for high schools and elite club
teams. Paul became a Certified Strength and Conditioning
Specialist (C.S.C.S.) with the National Strength & Conditioning
Association in 1991. This is the 'Gold Standard' for fitness certifications according to
the National Commission of Certifying Agencies. No other fitness organization holds this
standard!
Through dealing with serious orthopedic injuries and post-surgical difficulties of his
clients in therapy, Paul realized that if activities were developmental in nature and
specifically addressed one step in that progression, it would make for improved
performance fitness in the long-term no matter how high these goals - and these gains
would remain for a long time after the appeared. Moving over a developmental step to make
faster (but short-term) progress simply made no sense as
these are lost just as quickly.
This held for rehabilitation and it held for athletes. It had to be
progressive (slowly if necessary) and
following
simple developmental steps similar to developmental steps that we all
take from birth through puberty.
It was then that the seeds for something special took place. There are simply no quick
ways to long-term success. There is 'no magic bean'.
From that, Paul started CC&C in 1995 to specifically address these missing steps and
aspects of fitness he felt many conditioning instructors were indeed 'jumping over' in the
developmental progressions and others weren't even aware existed.
This first came to light with the publication of
"Comprehensive
Conditioning for the Elite Soccer Athlete", a very detailed performance
fitness text for post-pubescent soccer players, in 1995.
Following in the next few years were breakout presentations at the
Association
of Football (Soccer) Coaches and Teachers (AFCAT) in Milton Keynes England
and a Federation International de Football Association (FIFA) / CONCACAF
Goalkeeping Symposium at the regional Centre of Excellence outside Port of Spain,
Trinidad. Paul also presented at several National Soccer Coaches Association
of America national conventions, Eastern Athletic Trainers
Association regional conventions and State Symposium for the
National
Strength & Conditioning Association along with many state and local
symposiums. Paul also authored over 50 articles in newsletters and magazines and was even
utilized as a resource for 5 articles on WebMD.
By 2000, CC&C was offering 1) Athletic Training services
on a contractor basis for groups such as the New England Junior Falcons
(then known as the Junior Coyotes) 2) Educational seminars
throughout
the US and abroad and
3) Fitness instruction
on a one-on-one basis, on small-group (7-10 individuals) and also large
group (25-40) basis and 4) Off-Season fitness training
for USA Hockey /
MassHockey's Summer Satellite National Team Program.
CC&C continued to emphasize ice hockey and soccer fitness for
developmental progressions from ages 10 to adult. During that time, Paul has also gained a
unique perspective by gaining his coaching licenses in both ice hockey (USA Hockey Level
3) and soccer (CT State) although he prefers to defer to the experts for anything beyond
the basic technical or tactical instruction.
Due to regular requests from friends and associates of clients, CC&C expanded to
address fitness for several subpopulations - each of which present their own unique
challenges.
These include: 1) Fitness for 'recent Moms' post-partum is a tough time for moms let alone moms who were athletes
prior to their pregnancy. 2) Post-Rehab for those that wish to return
from an orthopedic injury to a very high level of competition in sport. These athletes
often have achieved some degree of function, are not at their maximum capability.....but
have fully expired on their insurance coverage for continued exercise-based treatment. 3) Fitness for entry to moderate-level trail running
- - Think is is the toughest of the three? Try having a baby.
Paul remains an active athlete himself competing in races in southern New England. In 2004
and with no previous trail racing experience but a self-designed training
protocol, he completed the 12.1 mile 7-Sisters
Trail Race with a top 75 finish and two weeks later, the 14.6 mile
Soapstone
Mountain Trail Half-Marathon taking 67th place. During that time, he was
able to complete 5 half-marathon or longer races in 43 days (both road and trail)
including accompanying his wife Carolyn through her first half-marathon in Simsbury, CT.
Also in 2004, Paul not only trained for and completed a sub-4 hour run at the Greater
Hartford Marathon, but 45 minutes after crossing the finish line, he was at a
hockey rink to cover an ice hockey doubleheader. In 2006, Paul completed a string of respectable finishes at the Nipmuck 16
Mile Trail Race, the 7-Sisters Trail Race, Soapstone Mountain Trail
Half-Marathon (35th place), a half-marathon in the 11pm to 3am segment of
the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life (working the day of and the day
after), a sub 1:50 finish at the Mount Washington Road Race and a top 20
finish at the People's Forest Trail Race (the USATF Connecticut State Trail
Championship). Paul can easily be found at races by looking for the black
and white camouflage boonie hat.
