Brightgear Belt Review
(04/21/05):
Well, after a full winter of running, it is time for a fair assessment of the Road ID
Brightgear gear - and especially the belt model.
Late last summer, I purchased
two belts (you'll see why) through the link above, received the belts and immediately wore
one for a run. Basically, it is a simple, 2" wide elastic band with three stripes.
The top and bottom bands are very bright, bold light green. My guess is that this is for
visibility during day-light hours. The middle band is a highly reflective silver-metallic
color. The band easily adjusted to size (and continued to be quite adjustable, even on the
run) but stayed a set size once adjusted.
As soon as we could, I had a
running partner run ahead of me (hence the need for a second belt) to test the reaction of
the belt to headlights. It ended up with almost shocking results.
This middle band is *so* highly reflective that you can easily be seen for at least ¼
mile. We would have enjoyed seeing how far it does brightly reflect, but our testing areas
is only a quarter mile long in a straight line and at that length, the reflectivity
appears as reflective not in any particular shape - but almost like a headlight shining in
your direction. It certainly assures that you are seen in plenty of time for a driver to
avoid you.
I found that having this belt
along with some reflective gloves and or hat really made a runner quite visible and much
safer. I wouldn't argue with a verticle band off of the belt (similar to a backpack -
without the backpack) for even better visibility, but it certainly did what it was
advertized to do - make sure that you are seen.
ROAD ID Tag Review (11/15/04):
OK - we've all seen items that may seem 'neat', but don't
really have a huge purpose (like running hats with fans built into them) - Rest assured
that this Road ID tag has a regular spot with my training gear.
I purchased a Road ID (yes, purchased. I don't really think it would be fair to have been
*given* one and then tried to fairly evaluate it, do you?) at the same fair price you can
get one here and have worn it since the snow was still on the ground this past spring.
It has given me and my family peace of mind throughout the long training and racing season
without so much as a scratch on it or on my skin. This includes 11 brutal long runs in 7
days of heat, humidity and fine sand along the Delaware Shoreline; around some sick rocks,
gnarly hills, trees and creek beds along the 7 Sisters and Soapstone Trail Series Races
and even during rainy and chilly runs with long-sleeve shirts. I've worn it both as an
ankle ID and as a wrist model. No complaints with either modification, although it does
help to wear crew socks for the ankle edition.
Worth considering as a special, one-of-a-kind gift especially for those that have to train
alone or or highly traveled roads.
Give a little bit of time for creation and delivery. They do arrive when the company says
the do, but make sure that you order one well before you need to.
