Notes on One Handed Edged Weapons

The Scimitar is easily one of the worst weapons in the game.  It swings slower than the short sword, yet the short sword has the same (or higher) damage factors across the board, with only a slight loss of AvD against heavier armor.

The Bastard Sword can be used with one or two hands.  However, its one handed version is fairly worthless.  Notice that it has lower AvDs than a Falchion in all cases.  However, the Falchion has nearly identical Damage Factors, and swings 2 seconds faster.  Unless you're a halfling or elf with nearly maxed Reflex and Dexterity, the Falchion is a better choice.  And even then, once you become encumbered, the falchion becomes a better choice.

In general, the Long Sword is best against lighter armors, while the Hand Axe is best against heavier armor.  The falchion strikes a good balance between the two.  The other weapons are fairly disposable.

Notes on One Handed Blunt Weapons

The Ball & Chain is supposed to operate with both the Blunt and Brawling skill.  I'm not sure if this has been fixed yet or not.

The biggest downfall for Blunt weapons is the prevalence of puncture immunity among undead.  Aside from that, choosing between Blunt and Edged is a personal preference.  Blunts tend to be less common, but they are also cheaper (up to a point).

Notes on Pole Arms

First of all, the Javelin data is missing because I've seen conflicting numbers.  I'm going to make sure I get it right before I put it up here.

Some pole arms can be used one handed, giving you the option of using a shield.

Pole arm users can use the TRIP verb to try and take the legs out from under an opponent.  This generally does a small amount of damage, and can range from a complete failure (25 RT from what I've seen), to a complete success, which puts the opponent on their back.  With our Sweep skill and our ability to get e-wave, this isn't really all that useful.

Using a two handed pole arm will grant you a bonus to your DS in offensive, in an effort to simulate range.  This bonus starts at +15, and increases with your pole arm ranks.  I'm not sure how high it can go, and at what levels it increases.  I'll have to check.

At a cost of 11/2, there's no way any rogue should be training in these.  You give up way too much for absolutely no tangible benefit.  If you want to swing a pole arm, might I suggest a warrior or bard.
