***Update 11/17/07*** Its been many long months since I last wrote but there was not much news to share. I have had my splint on all this time and over the months, I would go to the vet and he would say I was making progress but the xrays always showed that my leg wasnt yet fully healed. Well, I cant believe it. I went to the vet today and they did ANOTHER xray and my leg bones are finally fully joined [healed]. This doesnt mean I get to chuck the splint and run without it though! My leg is smaller and very thin from wearing splint support most of my life and now I must work to build the muscle in my leg by walking on it without the splint which I have not been allowed to do all this time. [I was working the leg muscles through the summer by swimming but then it got too cold and I lost a little ground!] When Im not walking on a leash in a controlled manner, I will still have to wear my splint but if all goes well.... Maybe someday soon Ill never have to wear it again! Please keep me in your thoughts and send your prayers and good wishes my way. ***Update 04/18*** I am undergoing long term therapy for my leg in the hope I will be able to keep it. My splint came off for a short time during early April and unfortunately, though my leg is now straight, it is not yet strong enough and healed enough for me to go without the additional support of the splint. My leg is healing but ever SO slowly. The vet is working to develop a special splint for me that can be put on and taken off easily at home. For the next 7 weeks, I will be wearing my regular splint. After 7 weeks, I will wear the easy on/off splint for the next 6 months unless I am being walked to build up strength in my right leg. If my leg is not stable at the end of this longer term therapy, I will have to have it removed. I want to thank everyone who has written to inquire about me. Please feel free to continue to ask about my progress if you are interested! For those of you who do not know my story, my bio is below: Hi! My name is Dash, and I came into rescue on January 8th. I am seal and white and 15 months old. I am on the large size for my breed at about 17". I was turned in to the Humane Society in October after breaking my right leg for the second time within a very short time. The Humane Society set my leg and took care of me while it healed. For some reason, my leg did not heal straight and I don't use it very much. Because of this, the Humane Society contacted Rescue to help find a good home for me. My original home and both foster homes have good things to say about me. I am crate trained and know how to use a dog door. I love to play [mostly on three legs remember!] and I am a cuddler. I'm used to sleeping under covers with the family at night. The Joy! I get along with everyone [dogs and kids both large and small, men, and women] but I must admit I can't resist chasing and barking at cats who wander around the yard. ***UPDATE 1/28*** I went to the vet and he said I might have some correction and more stability and comfort in my leg if I have the plate in it removed. Im scheduled to have surgery February 9th. I will need to recuperate a couple of weeks and then Im ready for my new home! Have you applied yet?!!! Though I can get around just fine with my leg the way it is, if the crookedness of my leg concerns you, my vet also said that after my leg heals from the plate removal, optional surgeries could straighten my leg significantly ***Update 3/11*** Hello! A lot has happened since I last wrote! I had the plate taken out of my leg on Friday 02/09. Taking the plate out meant the 6 large screw holes in my bone needed to heal by filling in. With my leg still so crooked and there not being much bone between the screw holes, I developed a hair-line fracture within one of the screw holes within three days of having the plate taken out. I thought my Doc would be pretty upset but he thought this was a perfect opportunity to work on straightening my leg since he could use the fracture in the screw hole to re-set my leg. I have been back for two check ups and so far, he said everything looks terrific. Doc says my leg is now much straighter and healing well. I have approximately four weeks more of being in a splint with very limited activity and then I should be ready to go to my new home. I will need a home willing to take me for walks to build up the muscle in my leg. Im looking forward to being able to run around again! I am neutered and up to date on my shots. Please-- if you are interested in having me be your dog, please contact Amy R at igrescue@cox.net for more information and keep checking back to see if I'm ready to go!! |
