Interior GLOBE
Meeting Notes
October 13, 1999
E-Mail Update
- We are updating our e-mail list for receiving notices
and copies of meeting minutes. If you have not received a notice from Jay Douglas on
this and you wish to be on the e-mail list, you can contact Robert_J_Veltkamp@nbc.gov or Jay_Douglas@blm.gov with an e-mail address.
Those wishing to receive "blind copies" so their e-mail addresses do not appear
on the "To:" listing can let Jay Douglas or Bob Veltkamp know.
AIDS Walk
- There were several Interior GLOBE members and friends
of GLOBE participating in the Washington AIDS Walk on September 26, 1999. Unfortunately
several of them ended up walking by themselves as the crowds were too large to keep
together. Jim will receive a final total of the money raised in the Walk and relay it to
People, Land and Water in a short article about the Walk and Interior employees
participating. It was observed by several participants in the Walk that this years
crowd was younger than previous years have been. During further discussions about AIDS
fundraisers it was discovered that the Washington AIDS Ride, in which four members
participated, raised $2.67 million net (after expenses) split between Food for Friends and
the Whitman Walker Clinic.
Diversity Council Representatives
- It was discussed that Interior GLOBE would have two
candidates for the Interior Diversity Council. They would both be full members
in their own right. It was felt that there is a need to have at least two members
from GLOBE as other minorities have more than two members who represent their views on the
Council.
Teleconferencing
- GLOBE is exploring interest in and methods for
bringing people outside the Washington Metropolitan Area into our monthly meetings.
There has been some discussion about how costs will be covered and alternatives are being
considered. There is not resolution on the use of broad ranging teleconferencing at
this point.
Andrew Dolkart Presentation
- October 21, 1999 at 12:15 p.m. in room 7000A&B
there will be a brown bag lunch presentation by Andrew Dolkart the historian who prepared
the historic register nomination for the Stonewall Inn. Maria volunteered to do a
flyer for the event to send out to interested Interior employees. Bob Veltkamp
volunteered to put the flyer information on the Interior GLOBE web site.
Monthly Meeting Location for 2000
- Interior GLOBE decided to meet in the North Penthouse
Conference Room on the second Wednesday of each month during the year 2000. Maria
will request the room from Conference and Special Events Office.
World AIDS Day Planning
- It was agreed that last year's program for World AIDS
Day should be a model for this year. In the previous two years Assistant Secretary
Berry has lead the Department in the observation of this Day. The NPS color guard
has presented the colors and the wreath while Assistant Secretary Berry has made remarks
in the C Street Lobby. Maria will follow up on the idea with Assistant Secretary
Berry.
GLOBE Website
- Bob Veltkamp, who has been working on the Interior
GLOBE web site, has offered to put it on his AOL account at no cost to him, the Interior
Department, or GLOBE. Bob will follow up to get a link to Interior GLOBE's web site
from the Departments Diversity web site which lists names and contacts for Interior
GLOBE.
Diversity Office Detail
- Candidates are being considered for a detail in the
Office of the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Diversity in the Workplace to work on
implementing the Department's policies of non-discrimination related to sexual
orientation. It is hoped that the detailee will be able to make an immediate impact
on the issues that GLOBE has raised concerning the Diversity Council and the
Departments Strategic Plan for Diversity.
