Meeting with Deputy Assistant Secretary for Human Resources and Work Force Diversity - Mike Trujillo
Andy asked if we could discuss the ideas that were to be discussed with DAS Trujillo. He stated that the Department is reorganizing the Equal Employment Opportunity Offices of all offices and bureaus. He has understood the reorganization would bring three regional offices for EEO: Washington, DC; Denver, CO; and Sacramento, CA. He suggested this reorganization could have a negative impact on how gay and lesbian employee grievances are addressed, as many offices outside of Washington, DC, still do not have the training or experience to manage these cases.
It was suggested that Richard Nolan study the proposed reorganization, but several members voiced the concern that Richard has not been communicating with the GLOBE members or leadership. It was stated that Richard might be marginalized due to his location. Jerry later suggested that he would contact Richard and then speak with Melodee Stith about the relationship of Richard to the EEO office.
The timing of the Trujillo meeting with Interior GLOBE leadership is for late January or early February. Jerry will work with the DAS office and let the leadership know of the date of the meeting. Andy suggested that maybe an alternative to the situation with Richard was to have John from USGS EEO take on the additional task of interfacing with Interior GLOBE. It was decided that Maria would write up a draft agenda for the DAS – Interior GLOBE Leadership meeting and Jerry would look through old minutes to see if there were topics for the meeting discussed in other monthly meetings. The general membership is encouraged to email Jerry Bock with any ideas for topics to discuss with the DAS.
Elections:
The slate of persons putting forth their names for leadership positions for the next year were discussed. Jerry said he had spoken to David Quick, Vice President, and David suggested that he was unable to provide any more time to the work of that position. Jerry expressed the need to have a more active Vice President for next year. Andy DeVito was asked to put his name forward for the position of Vice President and he agreed. It was agreed that the following slate of officers and the potential for write-ins be put to the membership for election:
|
President |
Jerry Bock |
|
Vice President |
Andy DeVito |
| Secretary | Ike Kelley |
| Treasurer | John Haugh |
| FedGLOBE Representative | Jay Douglas |
Bob Veltkamp agreed to handle the election officer duties, for which Ike Kelley had volunteered before putting his name forward as an officer candidate. Bob agreed to put the slate together and provide an electronic ballot (using a mailing list from Jay Douglas) and send it to the membership. Ballots would go out December 20, 2002, and would be requested to be returned by January 10, 2003, prior to the next Interior GLOBE meeting.
The slate of Officers would be posted on the Interior GLOBE bulletin board on the B-level of the Main Interior Building. There are still several members in the Solicitor's Office and the Bureau of Indian Affairs that do not have email access. Maria volunteered to be the point of contact to make sure they had ballots.
There was a discussion about having Bob send an email to all members to have them vote on a website, but there was not agreement on that. Bob said he would look into the possibility of that process.
Treasurer's Report
John provided the Treasurer’s Report. The organization had no income during the last month. There were no distributions. The balance of funds is $58.83 for the organization.
Update for the Newsletter
Maria said there would be three articles: GLOBE President’s message, an article on the USGS diversity program, and an article about Andy receiving the Meritorious Achievement award from the Office of Surface Mining.
The material would be turned over the Tami and after she laid it out it would be put up on the website and a small number of copies would be printed for distribution to selected Departmental Officials.
