Interior GLOBE
Meeting Notes

February 15, 2005

Special Emphasis Programs

John discussed the meeting of the DOI special emphasis programs (SEP). He is not only representing GLOBE, but also USGS. He is willing to continue in both capacities.

Sharon Eller, Chief of the Office of Civil Rights at Interior, requested the SEP to phase out the various celebrations/monthly events for each of the special emphasis programs and move to a single Diversity Day or Diversity Fair in, perhaps, June or July. GLOBE supports this idea and will participate in the new program.

At this time, it appears that other groups continue to plan individual events. The current focus is on African American Month.

June Pride

No bureau has stepped forward to coordinate this event. We’re not sure if this is something that has been assigned in the past or an agency simply volunteers to take the lead. Ike volunteered to set up a meeting with Sharon Eller to discuss this year’s event. Last year, GLOBE leadership worked with Sharon and Kathleen Wheeler to reach agreement on holding an event this year and is committed to following through with that promise.

After discussion, the question was asked: would FedGLOBE be willing or want to organize a broader event by organizing the various GLOBE groups?

Elections

We were due for elections of officers in December and have put them off. We need to look into moving forward with elections for 2005.

Ike has been operating in the capacity of leader/spokes person as Vice President since we didn’t have a President. He offered to move to the position as President. Mary is willing to continue as Secretary. Jerry volunteered to run for Vice President, if Ike runs for President.

Ike will check on John Haugh’s willingness to run for Treasurer again and then work with Jay to get out a call for other nominations.

Retreat

We discussed the possibility of getting folks together to have a planning session. This would be to establish answers to the following:

  1. Who are we?
  2. Why do we exist?
  3. Why do we have meetings?
  4. What do we want to be?
  5. What do we want to accomplish?
  6. Based on the above, how should we proceed over the next year(s) to move toward success?

Looking back at what DOIGLOBE has accomplished since it was created, anticipating what we are likely to face over the next four years, and taking into consideration the declining membership and attendance at meetings, we need to address expectations for our role and purpose within this department and what we should be doing.

Ike will send out an email soliciting thoughts about a date in March. We briefly discussed possible locations, without coming to a decision.

Ike suggested that GLOBE should demonstrate strong support for the other special emphasis programs, and it was agreed that Ike should send out a reminder to the GLOBE membership to support the other SEPs through attendance at their programs, including the upcoming African-American program.
