Planning for June Gay Pride Event and for Diversity Days Celebration

Steve Shafran, Program Specialist from the DOI Office of Civil Rights (OCR), attended the first part of today’s meeting. Steve will assist GLOBE in planning and conducting both Pride and Diversity Days events. Steve reported that the DOI Special Emphasis Observances Committee, DOI Blacks in Government (BIG) Chapter, and DOI Federally Employed Women’s Chapter (FEW) recently held a very successful celebration of “African American History Month” by presenting a workshop entitled: “The Importance of Black Authors.” Panelists included two authors and an artist. The authors discussed their books and offered copies for sale. The artist exhibited some of his work, presented a slide show of other pieces, and gave a basic course on “art training.” Steve said that the workshop attracted a lot of attention and was well attended by both managers and employees, and might serve as a possible model for this year’s June Pride event. OCR is willing to assist in organizing and conducting Pride if mutually acceptable panelists are selected.

OCR also has asked Steve to coordinate its annual Diversity Days Celebration in July or August. Tentative plans are to hold this year’s event inside the Main Interior Building in the various nooks and cubbyholes on all floors. This venue would make planning and logistics easier and less expensive and would avoid the effects of inclement weather. GLOBE officers will discuss planning for Pride and Diversity Days further and Ike Kelley will tentatively be Steve’s contact for coordination with OCR.

Planning for meeting with Sharon D. Eller, Director for the DOI Office of Civil Rights

Possible topics include introducing Interior GLOBE and its officers to Delia Trimble, Deputy Director, OCR, and investigating the availability of funding for education and training through a full-time Interior GLOBE liaison to OCR. Additional potential discussion topics are due to Ike Kelley by Friday, March 31, 2006.

Impounded email messages about GLBT issues

Tim Jones (NBC) volunteered to set up a group email account in Lotus Notes so the Department’s email filters do not impound Interior GLOBE messages indefinitely. Ike Kelley volunteered to serve as back up for Tim.

Executive order regarding consideration of sexual orientation when granting security clearances

Joe Briskey will draft a letter for President Ike Kelley’s signature expressing Interior GLOBE’s concern about this issue.

Proposed changes to the by-laws to more explicitly support transgendered employees and to clarify voting procedures for changes to the by-laws

These changes are designed to make Interior GLOBE more inclusive of the transgender community. The revised wording was reviewed during the meeting and Ike Kelley will submit the new draft as soon as possible for a vote by Interior GLOBE members.

Approve monthly meeting announcement sheets for bulletin boards

Reviewed and approved a new monthly meeting announcement template, attached, that will be posted at building entrances prior to the monthly meeting.
