Interior GLOBE
Meeting Notes

March 8, 2000

Castro Camera Shop Letter

Castro camera shop was nominated to be a Local Historic Landmark in San Francisco. The City’s Board of Supervisors will vote on the final determination, and it is expected to receive its designation.

2000 Census

There was a discussion on ways to fill out the 2000 Census form. Those who have domestic partners have been asked to sign the form as unmarried partners.   Although this is the only way to include our relationships on the census form, it does not separate straight and gay unmarried partners.

Security Clearances

There was a discussion, first brought up in the executive board’s meeting with Assistant Secretary John Berry, on the Park Service’s Northeast Region policy which might allow denying security clearances based on factors related to sexual orientation.  The issue is being discussed, and possibly resolved, by higher levels in the National Park Service.

Stonewall

The Stonewall designation was signed by the Secretary on February 16.  There has been no word from Assistant Secretary John Berry about what type of ceremony is being planned.

Newsletter

There was a discussion on the GLOBE newsletter.  It was suggested to send copies to the field offices.  Other suggestions include having a hard copy of the newsletter available in the lobby and on the web site.  It was agreed that we probably need to monitor how many are left out in the lobby area, as there is a chance they may be removed to prevent circulation.  Copies will be available at the Federal GLOBE booth at the Millennium March.  Copies will also be mailed to bureau directors and to the Blade.

By-Laws Discussion

There was an on going discussion on the collection of contributions and other matters related to the by-laws of GLOBE.  This will be a continuing discussion at the next meeting.

Millennium March

DOI GLOBE will be taking part in the Federal GLOBE reception at the home of Jeffrey Brooks.  Details will be forthcoming.  It was decided to invite all members who will be in town for the Millennium March to join us at the reception.   There is also a possibility of a Happy Hour for members on Friday before attending the reception.  Events planned include an information booth on Saturday and Sunday.   The various GLOBE's have been asked to volunteer staffing the booth for 3-hour intervals.  We agreed to sign up for the hours from 1p.m. until 3p.m. on Saturday, March 29.

Community Service Project

There was some brain storming to come up with suggestions for a community service project.  One suggestion was for Maria to contact Whitman Walker and ask what kind of volunteer work is needed.  There was a suggestion for an Adopt-A-Park project.  This could include a tree planting.  Jay also said he would contact Food and Friends to see what kind of volunteer help they could use.
