Interior GLOBE
Meeting Notes
May 12, 1999
June 8, 1999, Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual
Pride Program
- Jay opened the meeting and related his thoughts about
the need to address concerns for the June 8, 1999, Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Pride
Program (Pride Program). Andy had a check list of items that needed attention.
- An OSM representative is leading the effort for their
Office in regard to sponsoring this years Pride Program.
- Congressperson Tammy Baldwin, contacted personally by
Assistant Secretary Berry, has accepted the invitation to address the Pride Program.
She will speak for 20 minutes during the Program beginning at 11:00 a.m. on June 8,
1999.
- After a discussion of many topics for the
Congresspersons speech, one was selected. The topic for the Baldwin speech
will be: "Out and About in Government: Functioning as an openly gay or lesbian
Federal employee."
- There seems to be a problem with the NPS color guard
providing support for the Program and Jim volunteered to speak with Jackie Lowey if it was
determined that they did not wish to participate due to the nature of the Program.
- After much discussion the Program was set from the
Introduction by the Director of OSM to the Concluding Remarks by Jay.
- Bob offered to coordinate the announcement of the
Program with Fed GLOBE and the Washington BLADEs community notes. He was also
asked to inform the BLADE staff that they might want a reporter there as Congressperson
Baldwin was news worthy.
- There was a discussion of having coverage of the
Pride Program by People, Land & Water. It was decided that we should contact
PL&W, inform them of the details, and suggest having a reporter/editor attend the
Program. Jay will follow up on this.
- Andy volunteered to contact the Capital Pride
Festival to see if the GLOBE Pride Program could still be added to their advertisement.
- There was a discussion on how to get the message
about the Program to other employees and it was determined that the OSM representative
would be asked to provide the usual information on posters, handouts, LAN messages, and a
letter from the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Diversity, David Montoya, to employees
about the Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Program. Andy will follow up with the OSM
representative and Jay will contact Montoya.
- It was also asked if Congressperson Baldwins
Office could be asked to supply a written copy of her speech. It would be sent to
Fed GLOBE and Interior GLOBE members. Jay will ask for this.
- Maria asked of there were other events planned for
the week of the Program. Stephen discussed the canceled tour of Gay Washington.
The Tour Guide was ill and could not lead a tour until August. Maria
suggested a table be set up in the corridor outside the cafeteria to have the Sexual
Orientation Grievance Procedure, Presidents Executive Order on Gay and Lesbian
Federal Employees, and other topical information for the week of the Program. She will
contact Mariane Gately to set this up.
- Maria also suggested a lunch for GLOBE members and a
Brown Bag lunch with Director of EEO, Melodee Stith. Director Stith could discuss
the new Grievance Procedures in an informal setting and might bring more people out to
such an event. Jay will contact Melodee about hosting the Brown Bag lunch.
- It was proposed that those members that want to be
openly listed on the GLOBE e-mail mailing list respond to Jay via e-mail to confirm their
agreement to be shown on each transmittal. By being shown as a cc: or to: addressee,
it was felt that members could network better. Jay will follow up on this.
