June GLBT Special Emphasis Program
Ike mentioned that, for the event to have Departmental sponsorship, it needs to be educational, perhaps a workshop. The idea of a panel discussion was debated, and a theme was suggested focusing on “best practices for GLBT inclusion in the work place, including student expectations of potential employers.” Four organizations were proposed as potential sources of panelists: (1) Human Rights Campaign (HRC), (2) Gender Public Advocacy Coalition (GenderPac), (3) National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC), and (4) a recruitment organization. Suggested alternates are the AFL-CIO and Arnold & Porter LLP.
Sylvia Jones and Steve Shafran in the Office of Civil Rights (OCR) are the contacts with the Department. Maria volunteered to be the GLOBE liaison, and Jerry will assist. Proposed dates were Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday, June 27-29, 2006.
ACTION ITEMS: Maria and Jerry will coordinate with OCR and contact the organizations suggested for panelists. Joe will contact GenderPac.
The Berry Award
Jay Douglas, past President and one of the founding members of Interior GLOBE, has been selected as this year’s recipient of The New Millennium Human Rights Award, which will be conferred during the June special emphasis program event. The award is given annually by Interior GLOBE to honor an individual who has shown outstanding leadership and commitment in his or her efforts to significantly benefit gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered employees of the Department of the Interior. The award is also known as the John Berry Award, in honor of its first recipient.
ACTION ITEM: Ike will inform Jay by telephone that he is this year’s award recipient.
Interior GLOBE social event
Interior GLOBE members and friends are invited to meet at the back room after the special emphasis program event and proceed together to lunch at a mutually agreeable location.
GLBT-personality poster
The special emphasis program display case in the cafeteria of the Main Interior Building recently has displayed posters of notable public figures representing the communities being recognized during a particular month’s special emphasis program groups or goals. The posters so far have had a common look and feel to them. GLOBE would like to ensure that posters of notable GLBT public figures could be displayed during June.
ACTION ITEM: While discussing the June program with OCR, Maria and Jerry will investigate opportunities for placing posters highlighting GLBT personalities.
