Pride 2002 Celebration
Sylvia Jones, from Interior's Office of Educational Partnerships - the office planning the event - reported on her planning efforts for the June 26th celebration. Letters from Interior have gone out to Washington Metropolitan Police Department Chief Ramsey and to Parents, Family and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) requesting that they speak at the event. Chief Ramsey has not made a decision yet, but may have an answer by the end of the week. Interior requested an alternate speaker if Chief Ramsey cannot speak at the event. The President of PFLAG, Barbara Warner, has confirmed that she will be the second speaker at the event. PFLAG has coordinated with the Metropolitan Police Department in the past, and so is familiar with Chief Ramsey and his Department’s activities. PFLAG has requested an honorarium of $350.
A request letter is being prepared for the Not What You Think Ensemble of the Gay and Lesbian Chorus. Sylvia spoke to a representative who was unsure whether they could perform due to lack of available members. If the entire ensemble cannot make it, there is the possibility of having a male trio from the Chorus sing at the event.
There was discussion and agreement that a plaque should be presented to Chief Ramsey and possibly PFLAG for their participation in the event. The text of the plaque will be discussed at later date.
The theme for the event was discussed. The theme for the D.C. Capitol Pride festival is "United In Pride." It was agreed that Interior would adopt this theme and ask the speakers to incorporate this theme into their remarks.
Sylvia requested a list of other events planned by Interior GLOBE so they can be included on official posters announcing June Pride month. She has drafted a program and poster which she passed around to the attendees. The poster will have the GLOBE logo and may include the Interior GLOBE and FedGLOBE websites. Sylvia will get the Department’s rainbow flag and candle holders for the event. Sylvia will look into getting refreshments for the reception after the event. Tami Heilemann will take photos for the Department. A sign language interpreter has been requested. The latest GLOBE newsletter will be handed out at the event. Mark noted that comments or questions regarding this event should be e-mailed to:
doiped@aol.comBob will submit a request to the Blade newspaper that the June 26th event be listed in its calendar. Mark Oliver, from Interior's Office of Educational Partnerships, noted that the Metropolitan Police Department has a public affairs office which could also publicize the event to its employees and officers.
There was discussion about the length of the program. It was generally agreed that each main speaker would be allotted approximately 15 minutes. It is possible for the program to go longer than an hour, but not by much.
New Millennium Human Rights Award
There was some discussion about nominees for the award. Mark mentioned Deputy Assistant Secretary for Workforce Diversity Mike Trujillo because he has done work for the GLBT community in California. Mark will provide GLOBE with information so Mike can be considered for the award with the other nominees. A nominee will be selected at the next meeting.
The next meeting will be held in the John Muir Room (formerly Small Buffet Room) on June 12, 2002, at 12:15 PM.
