June Pride Planning
The June schedule is as follows:
June 12 - movie presentation of "The Celluloid Closet"
June 18 - financial planning for GLBT. Room 3121 at 12:00.
June 20 - GLOBE luncheon. Corcoran Gallery at 11:30. Members are asked to call Jerry to confirm their attendance.
June 26 - main program. South Interior Auditorium at 10:00.
The speakers for the main program, Metropolitan Police Department Chief Charles Ramsey and President of the D.C. Chapter of Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) Barbara Warner, have been confirmed. DOI employee Sarita Davis will perform two musical selections. She will be contacted to discuss musical selections. Mark Oliver, Acting Director of DOI’s Office of Educational Partnerships, reported that 50 buttons commemorating the June 26th program will be made and passed out that day. The refreshments have been ordered.
Alston Lake from Interior's Office of Educational Partnerships presented draft copies of the event program and the two posters he had prepared - one containing all June events and one specifically for the June 26th event. The program and posters were well-received by the group. The posters will also serve as the splash screen that appears on some employees’ computers and will serve as smaller fliers to be put up in addition to the larger posters. The larger posters, which cost $60 each, will be posted at the C and E Street entrances and in the South Interior Building. Mark’s office will send posters to the Metropolitan Police Department, and will notify Bureau heads of the program. Bob has already sent a notice of the program to the Washington Blade newspaper. Jerry will follow up with Jay on having our events posted on the Fed GLOBE website.
Minor changes were made to the posters including adding the DOI and FedGLOBE website addresses, clarifying titles of the speakers, and adding a different version of the DOI GLOBE logo. Further, in response to concerns raised by a transgendered GLOBE member in South Dakota, language indicating inclusion of transgendered and bisexual employees in all events was also added to the posters. This employee raised these concerns upon receiving the June 10, 2002, proclamation from Deputy Assistant Secretary - Workforce Diversity, Mike Trujillo, that proclaimed June to be "Gay and Lesbian Pride Month." The employee called the Assistant Secretary to express her concern that transgendered and bisexuals were not mentioned in the proclamation. Jerry will also address the need to be inclusive in his remarks on June 26.
Mark Oliver reported that Mike Trujillo will be unable to attend the program and give the Welcome address on the 26th. Mark will follow up with Assistant Secretary - Policy Management and Budget Lynn Scarlet to see if she can represent the Department at the event in place of Mike. If she is unavailable, Mark will try to have another high-ranking Departmental official give the Welcome.
Mark raised the possibility of showing a display of prominent GLBT personalities via a power point presentation during the reception following the program. It was agreed that Jerry will ask PFLAG if they have a video that can be shown.
The members thanked Mark, Sylvia and Alston for their work in making this program a success. The members also asked Mark to convey their thanks to Mike Trujillo for his support of the program and the issuance of the June Pride proclamation.
New Millennium Human Rights Award
The three nominees were reviewed by the attending members and a vote was taken to select the recipient. Melodee Stith, Director of the Office of Equal Opportunity, was unanimously selected as this year’s recipient of the Berry Award. Melodee has been an ally to GLBT employees at Interior for many years. Maria will contact Melodee to tell her of her selection and to invite her to attend the program on the 26th. Maria will also prepare a write-up listing her accomplishments, and ask Tami to prepare the plaque to be presented to Melodee.
Video Presentation
After the close of business, the video "The Celluloid Closet" was shown.
The next meeting will be held in the John Muir Room (formerly Small Buffet Room) on July 10, 2002, at 12:15 PM.
