Interior GLOBE meeting with Sharon Eller, Director of the DOI Office of Civil
Rights (OCR)
The meeting is scheduled for 11:00 am, Monday, July 2, 2007, in MIB Room 5214.
The agenda and briefing document that was compiled late last year has been
updated and given to Sharon. A draft of this document was sent by Ike Kelley to
Interior GLOBE’s membership by email on December 29, 2006.
Ideas for events for June Pride Month
The Department supports training sessions or awareness programs for Special
Emphasis Events like June Pride, not celebrations as in the past. Interior GLOBE
is continuing its attempts to identify such an opportunity. Meeting attendees
discussed some ways Interior GLOBE might attempt to identify subjects,
organizations, and people appropriate for such a training or awareness session,
including contacting the Human Rights Campaign and other GLBT advocacy and
support groups in the Washington, D.C., area.
Status of vote on proposed changes to Interior GLOBE by-laws to more
explicitly support transgendered employees, and make minor changes to voting
procedures
The 28 members who returned their email ballots approved these changes
unanimously. Interior GLOBE will make these changes to the copy of the by-laws
posted on our website.
Status of web pages highlighting careers and accomplishments of GLBT
employees
Ten NPS employees agreed to participate in an update of the existing NPS Web
page. Jim Gasser is working with NPS Web and EEO folks to get the page updated.
In addition, 5 USGS, 4 Office of the Secretary, and 2 BLM employees also
expressed interest in developing similar highlights for their bureaus. Interior
GLOBE will coordinate development of, and host, pages from our website for those
employees, from which their bureaus can then link. The Office of Civil Rights
has also indicated that they will link to our pages for a broader communication.
Interior GLOBE participation in the third annual NPS Diversity Recruitment
Event
This event, planned at the Horace Albright Employee Training Center at Grand
Canyon, AZ, has been postponed. However, when it is rescheduled, DOI GLOBE will
have an opportunity to participate as a partner to assist the Park Service in
recruiting previously under-represented candidates for the Department and the
National Park Service. One of our members, Dr. Pat O’Brien, has volunteered to
represent GLOBE at this event. Ike Kelley has had considerable correspondence
with Sharon Eller and others in the Office of Civil Rights. OCR agreed to
provide funding to help support GLOBE’s participation in this event. Interior
GLOBE is very grateful to NPS, to the Department, and to Sharon and OCR, for
their support.
