GENERAL INFORMATION

English classes are ongoing and class fees are required in advance. All teachers are dedicated volunteers. Emphasis is on conversational skills except where noted. Class placement is made at the first session. Students who register in the middle of a session will be placed according to ability. Use of Language Lab is included with class registration.

LANGUAGE LABORATORY
Individualized practice from beginning through advanced English is available in our language laboratory, Monday through Friday from 9:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M.

MONTHLY ENGLISH CLASS FEES**
All Classes are $35 per month (unless otherwise indicated)  and should be paid at the beginning of the month.

**Students taking more than 1 class receive a discount (reduction) of $5 for each additional class they take.

TOPICAL CONVERSATION CLASS  (
NEW CLASS STARTING MONDAY, OCTOBER 26, 2009 )


THROUGH A GUIDED CONVERSATION, THE TEACHER WILL ENCOURAGE STUDENTS TO SPEAK AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE.  STUDENTS WILL DISCUSS CURRENT HOT TOPICS RANGING FROM POLITICAL NEWS, SOCIAL ISSUES, AND EVEN THE LATEST HOLLYWOOD GOSSIP AS LONG AS IT HELPS TO MOTIVATE STUDENTS TO VIOCE THEIR OWN THOUGHTS.

AT THE BIGINNING OF EACH CLASS STUDENTS WILL READ A SHORT  TOPIC AND LOOK OVER THE VOCABULARY.  AFTERWARDS, THE STUDENTS WILL ENGAGE IN CONVERSATION AND THE TEACHER WILL ENCOURAGE EACH STUDENT TO PARTICIPATE.  STUDENTS WILL BE GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO GIVE A 5-10 MINUTE TALK ON A SUBJECT OF THEIR CHOICE.

INTERMEDIATE ENGLISH: Intermediate class with emphasis on structured dialogues with emphasis on intonation and pronunciation as well as grammar.    Instructor:  Elaine Meyrial

BEGINNER:  For students who need basic conversation and pronunciation training.

TUESDAY and THURSDAY CLASSES    11 A.M. - 12:30 P.M.


LISTENING COMPREHENSION & CONVERSATION -  For intermediate/advanced level students who need to improve their listening comprehension and conversational skills. The instructor will utilize various visual and auditory media and ask questions about the material presented. Students will practice conversation by discussing the contents of the materials presented.  Emphasis will be on comprehension.

ADVANCED INTERMEDIATE CONVERSATION  -
For students who want to improve basic conversation skills.

TWO-PART CLASS: Meets Tuesdays and Thursdays

a)  Tuesday: ADVANCED INTERMEDIATE CONVERSATION AND GRAMMAR.  
An English class for students who want to improve their conversational skills and learn more advanced English grammar.

b)  Thursday: DISCUSSION GROUP ON AMERICAN CULTURE, CUSTOMS, HISTORY
An English class for advanced level students featuring short stories, poetry and readings in American Literature, emphasizing reading and discussion skills along with some writing.

WEDNESDAY MORNING CLASS   
 9:30 A.M. - 11:A.M. 

COMMUNICATION SKILLS  -  Learn to speak more confidently in many situations, including school, work, social, job interviews, etc. Focus will be on verbal and non-verbal communication skills, such as volume, pronunciation, facial expression, eye contact, etc. From communication games to mini-talks, this call is very “hands-on” and totally “stress-free”. Students will learn by doing and enjoy the process. Individual student concerns with speaking in various situations will be addressed.

WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON CLASS   

English through American Short Stories
11 A.M. - 12:00 Noon
Level: For students who can easily read a newspaper article. Using the book America Writes, we will read and discuss selected short stories by renowned authors. Written exercises, vocabulary, grammar,idiomatic expressions. Instructor, Anne Marie Battistone.
WRITING
1 P.M. - 2:30 P.M.
  Intermediate to advanced level class for students who want to improve their writing skills. The class will study the structure of different sentences, paragraphs and essays.  Students will learn to recognize and correct their errors, as they revise their writing to make it interesting and understandable in proper American English.  It is recommended that students have at least an intrmeidate command of English to succeed in this class. ESL PRIVATE TUTORING
A Private tutoring program in which students meet with a teacher for 1 1/2 hours per week. All tutors are volunteers and we will place you with a tutor as quickly as we can.   Fee: $45 per month (6 hours).

TUTORS NEEDED
Would you like to meet people from other countries and help them speak English and understand American culture? Volunteers are needed for 1 1/2 hours a week, Monday through Friday between 9:30 A.M. and 5 P.M. Previous tutoring experience is not necessary and you don’t need to speak another language.
