LAFORTUNE/SOUTH LAKES WGA 9-HOLERS

MEMBERSHIP COFFEE

February 19,2009

President Pris Brown called the meeting to order at 10:30 AM at the Fellowship Lutheran Church.  She thanked the officers and committee members for their efforts in preparing the delicious brunch.

The President then introduced Pat McCrate, Director of Golf for LaFortune/South Lakes, who told us what is happening at LaFortune; some construction pictures are on the website; the main building has been torn down; hope to be finished by this fall.  They have a doublewide trailer at present.  The grill will be a concession stand.  A portable unit has been rented for a bathroom, but in two months the pool house will be open.  There is no ladies locker room, but they will find an area for our club to use for postings.  The website is being updated.  There is an icon for the 9-holers.  (Go to the lafortunegolfclub.com website.  On the left side of window, click on “Ladies Golf”.  Then on the right side there is an icon for the 9-holers.  Click on that and you’re in.)  A question was asked as to whether or not we could sign up on the website for our play days.  Pat said the website allows for that, if we decide to handle our signups that way.  Dates for the free golf clinic this year are April 13, l4, l5 from 9:00 AM to 10 AM.  First day will be putting; second day, shortgame; third day, full swing.  There is a price increase this year, first increase since 2003.  Biggest increase is on weekend play.  Members can buy a card  - pay for 20 green fees and get 25, but is not good for holidays or weekends.  Can buy cards at either course.  If 55 or older, we can buy a Senior card, which gives a bigger discount.

Paul Ridings, South Lakes Pro, spoke next about the South Lakes course.  Staff is same as last few years.  They have planted some new trees and are doing some drainage work on the eighth hole.  There will be a couples league in May and June on Friday nights; called Friday Night Date Night; playing nine holes.  They will have it again in the fall.  He reminded us of the Tulsa Golf Expo which begins February 20; coupons available; also will have a senior discount.

The LaFortune Golf Pro, Chris Jarrett, was introduced and told us LaFortune has a lot of exciting programs.  The Junior golf program has increased by 300%.  They have a ladies program scheduled for Thursday nights.  All Assistants at LaFortune are enrolled in the PGA of America.  All play days are listed on website.  Highlight any day of week and info is there.  He or his staff will show us how to navigate the website.

Pris asked members who will be playing at LaFortune on our first play day to be there at least 30 minutes early because of the construction going on.  She announced that we had 10 new members present.  This year the minutes of the general meetings will be posted on the website.  We will have copies of the minutes at the meetings for those who do not have internet.

The President then introduced the 2009 Board members, asking them to come forward when she called their name if they had a report.

The Vice President, Polly Middleton, and  Secretary, Caroline Parks, were introduced but had no reports.

Treasurer – In the absence of Mary Sue Whitney, the President gave the 2008 report.

     2008 Beginning Balance   $1,232.66

     Member Dues                      3,535.00

     Expenses                              4,121.68

     2008 Ending Balance              645.98

Based on our end-of-year balance, the Executive Committee and Board increased dues to $40.00.

Pairings – Also, in the absence of Mary Peterson, the President introduced the Pairer for each month.  New members will be paired with old members for the first few weeks of play.

Membership – Gail Eshom introduced our 10 new members.  Gail and Pris will meet with the new members on Thursday, February 26, at 10:00 at the South Lakes Clubhouse.

Handicaps – Sandi Estes said that this year our scorecards will be stamped, but will not have names; they will be in packets for members to pick up at LaFortune on the first day of play, l5 for LaFortune and 15 for South Lakes.  First line – PRINT name; second line – date; third line – Attest (be sure to have someone in your group sign this after checking addition, and verify that final score is recorded).  Putts go across bottom line.  If the card can’t be read, there will be no score for that day of play.  Circle pars and birdies on the card.  New members will need 5 scores for handicap.  Handicaps will be updated monthly and posted on bulletin boards.  She also added that she had seen Kay Smith and Kay sent her greetings to us.

Sports – Emily Capehart reminded us that play begins on March 5 at LaFortune.  Most of the major events will be at South Lakes.  We will also have scrambles and special skills events.  One person keeps score card for group and each individual player keeps her own card.  At end of 9 holes, scores will be finalized and turned in.  If you keep on playing, leave your 9-hole score card in the clubhouse.  She presented 2 awards that had not been presented at the end of 2008; C Flight, Low Net – Donna Stanberry; and C Flight, Low Gross – Priscilla Harris.  Pris added that 25% of those signed up for an event have to play in order for the scores to count.  If you don’t turn your score card in, you don’t qualify as having played that day.

Guest Day – Jan Davis told us Guest Day will be June 18.  Members may invite guests or may play with another member.  Tippy Hawkins, Nancy Kurowsky, and Pat Swift will help her.  The theme for Guest Day will be “Go for the Green”.  This will be an 18-hole tournament with cash prizes and lunch.  It is just in the planning stage.  She also mentioned that Tippy Hawkins, Dolores Boden, Barbara Sholtz, and Maxine Gentry started our organization.

Rules and Etiquette – Sue Warner said she will send rules or polite things to do that will be posted at the top of the pairings sheet.

Yearbook – Pris told us Brenda Baker has had recent surgery and Janice Holka has graciously accepted the duties as Yearbook Committee Chairman.  Janice is getting updated information from members and is taking pictures of new members and all members who want new photos in the yearbook.

Pars and Birdies – Barbara Nelson said we will be using the same sheet this year as last year.  Please PRINT names this year.  She explained how to fill out sheet – post name, date, which golf course, and whether it was a par or birdie or eagle.  This is for only the first 9 holes.  Each player is responsible for posting her own information.  Members will get cash and a pin for birdies, eagles, or a hole-in-one.  At South Lakes this will be in the ladies locker room.  At LaFortune we will have a place designated for our information during the construction period.

Newsletter – Dorothy Irby will continue keeping us up-to-date on all club information through E-mails and internet postings on “Chip-N-In”.

Pris reminded us to notify Dorothy Irby or Caroline Parks of any illness or deaths affecting our members, so that cards can be sent.

May 7 is our next scheduled business meeting.  The meeting location is to be determined.  Guest Day will be our primary discussion.

New Business – Pris announced that several areas in our club need backup and encouraged anyone who has the needed skills to let her know.

It was discussed at the Board Meeting that if our club does not want to keep our scores and handicaps within our group, LaFortune will do it for us, but there will be an extra charge of $7.00 per person to do this. No vote was taken but discussion from the floor was negative.

Meeting adjourned at 11:20 AM.1

Respectfully submitted,

Caroline Parks, Secretary
