LAFORTUNE/SOUTH LAKES WGA 9-HOLERS

GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING

May 7, 2009

President Pris Brown called the meeting to order at 12:15 PM at Johnny Carino’s, 9718 Riverside Drive.  She welcomed new members and thanked all members for attending the meeting.  There were 30 members present.

The main item for discussion was Guest Day, and Jan Davis, who is Chairperson for Guest Day, was asked to give an update on plans for the day.  Guest Day is scheduled for June 18 and the luncheon will be in the pavilion at South Lakes.  Her main requests for all of us are that we sign up, wear green, and bring a guest. There will be sign-up sheets at South Lakes and LaFortune; husbands will be asked to help as in the past.  “Go Fore the Green” is the theme for the day.  Teams will have names assigned.  She and her assistants want us to have as much fun as possible.  If a member does not have a guest, she may sign up to play with another member.  The cost will be $38.50 for seniors and $48.50 for non-seniors.

Pris, speaking for all the members, welcomed Brenda Baker back to our group after her lengthy recovery.  Brenda told us Su’z Beaman is having a difficult time recovering from her knee surgery.  She will be going to another doctor soon to get help to control the pain.  Pris asked for updated information on Jeanette Foster.  It was reported that she is making good progress in her recovery from her recent accident.  Pris asked that we all remember Sue Warner’s husband who has been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Copies of minutes of  the February Membership Coffee were at each table and members were asked for any comments.  There were none, and a motion was made and seconded that the minutes be accepted as written.  Motion carried and minutes will be posted in the members’ website maintained by Dorothy Irby.

The President asked the Board members for their reports.

Mary Sue Whitney, Treasurer, reported there are 102 paid memberships; 93 of these are active members and nine are sustaining members.  The current balance in our account is

$4,063.53.

Mary Peterson, Pairings Chairperson, thanked the three members who have done the pairings so far this year – June Dudley, March; Sandi Estes, April; and Dorothy Jordan, May.  All have done a good job.  There seemed to have been a misunderstanding about starting time.  For May the starting time is 8:00 AM, and the June starting time will be 7:30 AM.  Mary said that on Guest Day each “goody” bag will have a coupon for a free sandwich or wrap from Quick Trip, so be sure to look for it and don’t accidentally throw it away.

Gail Eshom, Membership Chairperson, reported that we have two or three new members since our book was published.

Sandi Estes, Handicaps, requested that everyone print their names so she can read them and please don’t use initials only. Be sure to include the score for the 9th hole.  Handicaps are ready and will be posted at South Lakes in two weeks.  They will also be sent to Pris and she will have them posted on the LaFortune website.  Handicaps now posted on the website are from last November.

Emily Capehart, Sports Chairperson, gave out the awards won so far this year to the winners present at the meeting.  Next week is Mulligan Day.  The Members’ book says there will be a mulligan for every hole, which is incorrect.  There will be only two mulligans for each player for the entire nine holes.  Mulligan coupons will be at the Starter’s table.  She asked that when filling out individual cards, print name first and record putts on line stamped “Putts.”  On the team card, print name on first line and putts on line below the name for each player.  This will help both Sports and Handicaps Chairs.

Sue Warner, Rules and Etiquette Chairperson. requested that if anyone has a suggestion for use on the Pairings sheet, please call her.

Pris complimented Janice Holka on the outstanding job she has done in publishing our new 2009 Members’ Book.

Lois Voeller asked about free relief from casual water.  We are allowed relief from casual water as covered in General Rule #8 in our Members book.  It was also mentioned that at this time of year, with all the rain we have had, the lift, clean, and place rule should be used.

Merry Porter brought up the subject of players having trouble with sand traps.  The discussion was that if a player’s ball lands in a sand trap, the player could declare an unplayable lie and hit another ball from the same place before advancing.  The score would be counted the same as for a ball being hit into a water hazard – i.e., 1 in, 2 out, hitting 3.  The ball in the sand would be picked up as play progresses past the sand trap.

Barbara Nelson, Pars and Birdies Chairperson, said members are doing a good job posting their pars and birdies.  So far there are 36 players who have pars and  four have birdies.

Dorothy Irby, Newsletter Chairperson, unable to attend the luncheon today, continues to maintain the website showing play dates, rules, and other helpful information regarding our club.

New business – The President announced the following meetings are planned:

July – Board meeting to appoint a Nominating Committee which will be announced by –e-mail and website.

September – Nominating Committee to present Slate of Officers for 2010

November – Membership votes on Officers for 2010

   December 3 – Holiday Luncheon

Also, Pris reminded members that we still need backups for individual Chairs, especially volunteers with computer experience.

A motion was made and seconded that the meeting be adjourned.

The President adjourned the meeting at 12:40 PM.

Respectfully submitted,

Caroline Parks, Secretary
