LAFORTUNE/SOUTH LAKES WGA 9-HOLERS

GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING

September 10, 2009

The meeting was called to order at 1:15 by the President, Pris Brown.  The meeting

was held at Johnny Carino’s, 9718 Riverside Drive.  There were 33 members present.

Pris thanked Polly Middleton, Vice President, for arranging for the meeting, and thanked members for attending.

Since the course was going to be closed due to rain, this day’s Play Day was cancelled.  The President said the first round of the Club Championship will be at LaFortune Golf Course next Thursday.  The second round will be at South Lakes the following week.  For the scores to be valid, 25% of those signed up must play.  New tee times will be scheduled, according to handicaps.  A Telephone Committee will call members who have signed up if there is another cancellation.  Members were reminded to call the golf course if they cannot be there any time they are scheduled to play.

The President turned the meeting over to the Vice President for her announcement of the Nominating Committee’s recommendations for Executive Officers for next year.  Those on the Committee were Polly Middleton, Vice President (Chairman of the Committee), Emily Capehart, Merry Porter, Pat Swift, and Gail Eshom.  The Committee recommends retaining Pris Brown as President, Mary Sue Whitney as Treasurer, and Caroline Parks as Secretary.  Polly has declined re-nomination.  Barbara Tenney has been nominated for the Office of Vice President.  The President asked for nominations from the floor.  There were none.

According to the Club’s Bylaws, no vote could be taken at this meeting.  The vote for officers will be at the October 22, 2009, meeting scheduled at 1:30 PM at Johnny Carino’s, 9718 Riverside Drive.  Also at that meeting, Pris will announce information about the Holiday Luncheon.  October 22 is our Rally for the Cure day, and at our meeting, Merry Porter will present awards won that day.

The President thanked Jan Davis and her Committee; Tippy Hawkins, Nancy Kurowski, Pat Swift, and Mary Peterson; for their excellent handling of the Guest Day activities on July 18 at South Lakes Golf Course.

Pris asked if there was approval of the minutes of the May 7, 2009, meeting as published on our website.  Mary Barron made a motion to accept the minutes as written, and Mary Walters seconded the motion.  Motion carried.

It was announced that Su’z Beaman is recovering from her second knee surgery.  Adelia Farris is also recovering from recent hip replacement surgery.

Twelve members have not played enough times to have handicaps.  Seven of these are new members.  We need to check on these new members to see why they have not been playing, and encourage them to get involved and stay in our group.  They are important to the group and we want them to continue to be a part of the organization.

The President asked Officers and Committees for their reports:

Vice President, Polly Middleton, asked for anyone who has ideas for a meeting place to please call her.  It was mentioned that the LaFortune Clubhouse will be completed soon, and it might be used for some meetings.

Treasurer, Mary Sue Whitney, reported that we have 106 members – 97 regular and nine sustaining members.  The current balance on-hand is $3,542.47.  The only expenses paid for have been for postage, cards, flowers, and for yearbook expenses.  The Sports Committee has not turned in expenses for this year, which is about $700 at this time for prize money for weekly tournaments.  This will reduce the balance considerably.  Pris added that the Club cannot sustain paying for an expensive meal at the Holiday Luncheon, and that each member may have to pay $18 to $20 for the luncheon this year.

Pairings – Mary Peterson said everyone on her Committee has done a good job.  Marthanelle Jones asked if pairings could be a little more mixed up.  It was explained that pairings often depend on members requesting that they play early for health reasons, etc., early, early-early, or with certain other members, which makes it hard to pair groups.  Also, when we have a tournament, these have to be flighted according to handicap.

Membership – Gail Eshom greeted and introduced Bridget Muller as a new member of our Club.

Handicaps – Sandi Estes asked members to be sure to identify their score cards each play day by putting their first initial and last name for identification instead of just initials.  Otherwise, their scores cannot be recorded.  There will be new cards for next year.  The handicaps are posted on LaFortune website and our website.  There is a link on our website to the LaFortune website (then under Golf Course-Ladies Golf League-LWGA

9 hole League-Handicaps).

Sports – Emily Capehart said everyone is doing great on score cards, but need to have clear identification and make sure they are legible.  She passed out prize money to some members at the meeting, but still has some for those not present.

Merry Porter announced the Rally for the Cure Tournament which will be October 22 at South Lakes Golf Course.  This year we will have our choice of a 1-year subscription to one of three magazines:  Golf Digest, Self, or Gourmet.  The cost is $20.  Please put on the memo portion of your check which magazine you want.  An e-mail has been sent out from the website reminding us to send our checks to Merry.

Rules and Etiquette – Sue Warner said a question had been asked as to whether someone can mark another person’s ball on the green without penalty on either player.  This is allowable under some conditions.  Either the person playing the ball can ask another player to mark and lift the ball, or another player can ask if she can mark and lift the ball.  The person who marks and lifts the ball must replace the ball.  If this is done correctly, there is no penalty.  Otherwise, there is a one-stroke penalty against the player of the ball (USGA Rules of Golf, Rule 20-1 and Rule 20-6).

Yearbook – Janice Holka still has some yearbooks for new members.

The President noted that the cost to join goes down after September 1.

Pars, Birdies, and Hole-In-One – Barbara Nelson said there have been 12 birdies this year. Last year at this time, there were 47.  We have 57 members with at least one par.  Nine of the 12 birdies were at South Lakes, most of those on holes #6 and #2.  The three at LaFortune have been on holes #6 and #3.  Please print your name on the sheets that are at the golf courses.

Newsletter – Dorothy Irby receives the pairings from the Pairings Committee for that week and posts on the website and sends to the golf courses.  An e-mail is then sent out to the group.

The President called for New Business:

On October 22 at Johnny Carino’s, the members will vote on Officers and get updated information on the December 3 Holiday Luncheon at Cedar Ridge.

How do we feel about our meetings?  Are they convenient after playing golf?  Pris would like comments from members.

The President will continue looking for backup for some Committees.

Sue Warner will be doing the decorations for the Holiday Luncheon.  She is looking for some inexpensive baskets or sleighs for decorations.  If anyone knows where she can find them, please let her know.

The President adjourned the meeting at 1:55 PM.

Respectfully submitted,

Caroline Parks
