Mickey's date of birth is estimated to be in the year 1814. His death record states he was 76 at the time of his death in 1890 and that he was born in County Mayo, Ireland.1 He was the son of John Quinn. His given name was Michael S. Quinn. His middle name may be Samuel. On Mickey's son, Martin's death certificate his father's name was listed as Samuel. So Mickey's given name maybe Michael Samuel.

Mickey Quinn lived through The Great Famine.

On 14 February 1855Mickey married Mary Cormack, daughter of Martin Cormack and Bridget Hoban, at the Roman Catholic Church, Islandeady, Islandeady Parish, County Mayo, Ireland . Mary's parents were living in the townland of Cummer at the time of her marriage. It is not clear where Mickey was living before their marriage but there is a John Quinn living in the townland of Carrha at this time. It is possible that he was Mickey's father.

The Great Famine was about ten years prior to the marriage of Mickey and Mary. Most of the people who lived in that area of County Mayo lived on land leased from Sir Roger Palmer. It is believed that they were evected from their home in much the same way as the famine families were put out of their homes. The following article is an excerpt from the Islandeady web page.

At the beginning of the famine in 1845 and 1846 many landlords reacted with compassion, some reducing rents. Even Lord Lucan involved himself in relief measures but by 1848, he was enforcing wholesale evictions of tenants unable to pay rents on his lands around Castlebar and Ballinrobe. Equally infamous was Sir Roger Palmer who owned 90,000 acres in Mayo. In July 1848, The Telegraph reported how at Islandeady his 'crowbar invincibles', pulled down several houses, and drove forth the unfortunate inmates to sleep in the adjoining fields. On Thursday we witnessed the wretched creatures endeavouring to root out the timber of the houses, with the intention of constructing some sort of sheds to screen their children from the heavy rain falling at the time. The pitiless pelting storm has continued ever since, and if they have survived its severity, they must be more than human beings'.

Mickey and Mary lived in Derryribbeen, Kilmeena Parish. Their home no longer stands. During a trip to Ireland in 1995 the place where the home was located was shown to Peggy Haley and Betty Patterson by Herbert Keane, grandson of a man who knew Mickey and his family prior to their emigration from Ireland. Herbert told of how his grandfather took him for walks when he was a child and related stories of the days when there was a small gathering of homes in that area. According to Herbert, the land was confiscated for additional farm land by the landlord and the occupants "encouraged" to leave the premises. In the years after the famine many farms that mainly grew crops were turned into cattle farms and the tenant farmers who were no longer needed to grow those crops were evicted. It was at this time, about 1884, that the Quinns left Ireland for America across the "Broad Atlantic". James Cusack, lived across the road from the Quinns. He was not only their friend but a teacher who taught the younger Quinns.

A letter was sent by James Cusack to Msgr. John Quinn in 1952 in answer to an add placed in a Mayo area newspaper by Msgr. Quinn in an attempt to locate any family that may remain in the area. James' grandson, Joe Cusack, was visited by Peggy Haley and Betty Patterson in April of 1995. Joe Cusack had the letter written in reply to James Cusack by Msgr. Quinn. The substance of James Cusack's original letter follows.

Dear Father Quinn,

I knew Micky Quinn and his wife Mary Cormack (maiden name) and every one of their children: Brigid, John, Michael, Pat, Martin, Mary, Margaret and Julia. I went to school with all of them except Brigid, and Martin and Julia came to school to me for six months before they went to America.

They all lived in the village of Derrynaknock in the Half Parish of Kilmeena, and their house was only about twenty yards from mine.

They all left here in April of 1884. Michael and I were the same age. Micky and his wife came to live in Derrynanaugh from Islandeady Parish. Micky had a brother called Jack living in the Parish of Islandeady and I knew him: he had two sons Pat and John; they lived in the village of Corrha, about midway between Derrynanaugh and Castlebar. I think Pat had no family and John had a daughter who got married, but I don't know whether she is yet living. They had a sister named Margaret who was married to a man named Jack Browne, within a few hundred yards of where Micky lived. She and her husband and family emigrated to England. There are very few people living now who remembers them.

If you ever take a trip to Ireland I can show you the house where they lived. If there is anything else you'd wish to know and that I can reveal I'd be only to glad to do anything in remembrance of my dear old neighbours and hence I'm writing in reply to your inquiries in the "Mayo News". I'm now 88 years of age and my sight is not very good.

Wishing you every blessing,
I remain,
Very truly yours,

Herbert Keane also told Peggy and Betty that the only one of the Quinns to ever return was Michael, Mickey's son. Herbert remembered hearing that the local people thought Michael to have been a very wealthy and successful man when he returned for a visit to his homeland..2 This article from the Mayo News that was published on the Islandeady Website gives an idea as to what may have happened to the Quinns before they left for America. !C:PEGGY'S FILES/GENEALOGY/TMG/REPORTS/MAYO AFTER FAMINE. His wife, Mary, died in 1883 in Ireland. There is no indication that Mary ever came to the U.S. with her family. Family oral history relates that Mary died in Ireland before her family emigrated. However no record of her death has yet been found in the Civil Registry for Kilmeena or Islandeady. She may have traveled to the port city with her family and died there prior to their departure. Mickey immigrated in 1884 to Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. Family legend has it that he came with all of his children. The date and place of either embarkation in Ireland or debarkation in the U.S. is not yet known as is the ship on which they traveled. Research in the city directories of Chicago for that time period indicate that Mickey's two oldest sons, John and Patrick, may have come over a few years earlier than their father and siblings.3

Mickey died of Cirrhosis of the liver after a seven month illness, on 14 July 1890 at his home, 354 Dayton St. In Chicago. He had been living in the U.S. for six years prior to his death.1,4 He was buried on 16 July 1890 at Calvary Cemetery, Evanston, Cook County, Illinois; Obituary from the Daily Inter Ocean "Quinn-July 14, at No. 354 Dayton street, Michael Quinn, aged 76 years.      Mary Cormack is believed to have been born about 1835 in Cummer, Islandeady Parish, County Mayo, Ireland .1 She was the daughter of Martin Cormack and Bridget Hoban.1

Mary Cormack lived through The Great Famine with her parents on their farm in Cummer.

On 14 February 1855 Mary married Mickey Quinn, son of John Quinn, at the Roman Catholic Church in Islandeady, at County Mayo.      John T. Quinn was born in July 1860.1 He was the son of Mickey Quinn and Mary Cormack. John T. Quinn immigrated in 1876 to Chicago, Illinois. This year of immigration is listed in the 1900 census. There is a John T. Quinn listed in the Chicago City Directory for this year which may be the correct John Quinn but futher research is necessary because of a discrepancy in the date of immigration listed in the 1920 census. Here the date is 1880. No Ships Passenger List or Port of Entry have been found to date.1 In the Chicago City directory of 1880, a John Quinn is listed living with Patrick Quinn and Anthony Gallagher at 120 Illinois Avenue. Because John had a brother Patrick and a friend Anthony Gallagher, this is believed to be the correct John Quinn but futher proof is necessary because of the immigration date discrepancy.2 In 1884 John is again listed in the City Directory living at 28 Willard Place with his father and siblings..3

On 1 February 1888 John and Sophia C. Casey obtained a marriage license at the office of the Clerk of the County Court of Cook County, Chicago, Illinois.4 They were married on 2 February 1888 at the Cathedral of the Holy Name, in Chicago. Witnesses to the marriage were Patrick Quinn, brother of the groom as Best Man and Annie Casey as Maid of Honor.5 In 1890 they were living at 1577 Otto Street. This was their home for many years. About 1894 this end of Otto Street was re-named Buckingham Place and after the re-numbering of Chicago in 1910 the street number was changed from 1577 to 815. Otto Street has since been renamed and at this writing is called Hendersen Street.

John was enumerated in the 1900 U. S. Census taken at 1577 Buckingham Place as head of a household consisting of his wife, Sophia, and their children: Marie, John, Vincent, Sybil, and Catherine. A servant, Margaret Caulfield was also enumerated with the family. John is listed as a white, male age 39, born July 1860 in Ireland, immigrated in 1876, resided in the U.S. for 24 years and was naturalized. His occupation is listed as a butcher and he has been employed for the previous 12 months. He could read, write and speak English. He has a mortgage on his home.1

John T. Quinn was a butcher by trade. On a date before 1910 he opened the John T. Quinn meat market on Chicago's North Side. At 861 N. Sheffield Ave.6 In the census taken on 20 April 1910 at 815 Buckingham Place, Chicago John was enumerated as the head of a household which included his wife, Sophia, and their children: Marie M., John M., Vincent M., Syble M., Kathleen M., and Patricia M. Also enumerated was Bridget A. Casey, 51, sister-in-law. John was age 49, listed as owner of his own Butcher shop and had a mortgage on his home.6

The census of at 815 Buckingham Place, Chicago taken on 13 January 1920 enumerates John as the head of a household consisting of his wife, Sophia, and their children: Marie M., John M., Kathline M., and Patricia M. Also listed was Bridget Casey, sister-in-law. John was age 59, retired, owned his home free of mortgage. His year of immigration is listed as 1880 and naturalization in 1885.7

John was enumerated in the 10 April 1930 U. S. Census taken at 714 Briar Place, Chicago as head of a household consisting of his wife Sophia and their daughter Marie. John was 69 years old and not working. He was presumably retired. He owned his home and its value was listed as $25,000.00. The family also had a radio. This census lists 1880 as John's date of immigration and he was naturalized. There was also a boarder named John H. Johnson living with the family. He was from Sweden and working in construction. There is no date of immigration or alien status given for him..8

John T. Quinn died in June 1935 at Chicago, Illinois, at age 74. He was buried on 2 July 1935 at Calvary Cemetery, Evanston, Illinois.

He immigrated in 1883 to Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.1 The date of 1890 is given for Michael's date of Naturalization on the Chicago Voters Registration of 1892 but the name of the Court where the citizenship was administerted is not given.2

On 20 March 1891 Michael and Delia Corcoran obtained a marriage license from the Clerk of the County Court, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois .3 They were married on 31 March 1891 in Holy Name Cathedral, Chicago, by Father James M. Because there was no other surname given for Joseph, it is assumed that his name was also Quinn. His parents have not been identified.. The family was living at 1625 Leavitt Street.5

Martin Francis Quinn was born on 6 October 1869 in Derryribeen,Kilmeena Parish, Ireland. The family home was in a small village of thirteen or fourteen homes. They were famers with small plots of land to raise crops for the landlord, Sir Richard Palmer, and food for their own families. Martin's father was a blacksmith in addition to being a farmer. After the famine, the landlord decided he would be better off with the tenants gone and the land made into pastureland for cattle. The families were evicted and the homes destroyed..1 He was the son of Mickey Quinn and Mary Cormack.

With their home gone the family decided to emigrate to America. Martin's mother died in Ireland prior to the family leaving their homeland. It is not known exactly when the family arrived but it was in the early 1880's. Martin immigrated about 1884 to Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, United States of America.2 He was naturalized on 25 March 1895 at County Court of Cook County, Chicago, Illinois, at age 25. .3

Martin is listed in the 1900 Census of Illinois boarding with the James M. Clarke family at James M. Clarke, 632 Harrison, Chicago, Illinois. He was 24 years old and working as a janitor. His date of immigrated from Ireland was given as 1885 and he was naturalized. He could read, write and speak English. Even though Martin was actually 30 years old at this time and not 24, I believe this to be the correct Martin Quinn because on his marriage records in September of the same year his age is listed as 24. For some reason he wanted it known that he was younger than his actual age. Because his naturaization papers are for that of a minor,I believe the reason for the discrepancy to be connected to those papers.2

Martin married Elizabeth Mary Corcoran, daughter of James Corcoran and Sarah Barrett, on 5 September 1900 at St. Andrew's Church in Chicago; On the day of her wedding, Dr. Henrotin wrote a letter of congratulations to Lizzy. Enclosed with the letter was a $20.00. In 1900 that amount would have filled an entire room with furniture. It was a very extravagant gift. As can be seen in advertisments in the "Interocean", a Newspaper published in Chicago at the turn of the 20th century, an oak kitchen chair sold for $0.89, an oak pedestle table for $3.89, a living room sofa for $8.00. The Henrotins seem to have been very happy with Elizabeth and enjoyed the time she spent in their employ. Elizabeth lived with the Henrotins and was an office attendant for Dr. Hentroin in his medical practice.4 Click to view image

In the census taken on 21 April 1910 at 1820 Otto St., Chicago, Illinois, Martin was enumerated as the head of a household which included his wife, Elizabeth and their children: Mary, Elizabeth, Clement, Monica, John and Coletta. Martin was listed as 38 years old and had been married for 10 years. His date of immigration was said to be 1888 and he was natualized. He could read and write English and was a horseshoer by trade. He was renting his home.5

The census of at Chicago, Illinois taken on 12 January 1920 enumerates Martin as the head of a household consisting of his wife, Elizabeth and their children: Maria (Mary), Elizabeth, Clement, Monica, John, Colette and Ursula. Martin was 49 years old and married for 20 years. His date of arrival in the U.S. is listed as 1880 and his date of Naturalization as 1888. This is a discrpancy with the 1910 information. His place of employment is Peoples Gas Company.6

During the depression years Martin had a still in the basement of their family home and made "gin" for sale on the street. He was working for People's Light, Gas and Coke in Chicago. With the help of his brother who was a pipe fitter for the same company he re-routed the gas lines in the house so that they would bypass the meter. The man who read the meter each month came on the same day of the week and Martin made sure he was home to greet him. Martin would offer him a beer and tell him tosit and rest at the kitchen table while he went himself into the basement to read the meter. One day in a new man was assigned to this route and he came on an earlier day than usual. Martin was not home when he arrived. Coletta, Martin's daughter, let the man in and when he saw the setup in the basement he reported it to the Gas Company. Martin was fired and not only lost his job but his pension. Because of their loss of income Martin and Elizabeth were unable to keep their house on Leamington avenue. Their daughter, Mary and her husband, Frank bought the house and lived there with Mary's parents and siblings. About 1937 Martin and Elizabeth moved to a small carriage house on Winona Street not far from their Leamingto Avenue house. They lived there for two years before Elizabeth's death.

Martin was enumerated in the 1930 census with Frank Whelan, his son-in-law, on 17 April 1930 at 5235 Leamington Avenue, Chicago, Illinois. Martin was 56 years old and living with his wife in the home of their daughter, Mary. He was naturalized and his date of immigration was listed as 1884. There is no occupation listed in this census.7

His wife Elizabeth died on 16 March 1939 at 5105 Winona Street, Chicago, Illinois, at age 63. She died on the day before St. Patrick's day of complications of cancer of the bowel. Her death was a severe blow to her family. Elizabeth's daughters believed that the fact that their father lost his pension was a contributing factor for their mother's loss of the will to live.8

Martin died on 28 November 1963 at St. Joseph's Hospital, Memphis, Tennessee, at age 94.9 His body was returned to Chicago for burial next to his wife.. Martin was buried on 2 December 1963 in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Hillside, Illinois.

At the age of 21, Mary was married to Martin Gallagher at Saint Vincent de Paul Church, Chicago, on 8 May 1893. The ceremony was performed by Father F. X. Antill. Witnesses to the wedding were Frank Sheppard and Julia Quinn.3

Mary died of Mitral Valve Disease of the heart on 13 January 1895 at 194 Lewis Street, Chicago, Illinois, at age 22 . Mary most likely had Rheumatic Fever as a child which left her with the mitral valve disease. This disease is usually not fatal. But pregnancy puts an added strain on the heart which in the case of an impaired mitral valve causes a decreased amount of oxygen in the tissues. She and her infant son, Edwin, were affected by this weakened condition. Deprived of oxygen in the late pregnancy and during the birth process Edwin was born mentally impaired. Mary never recovered from the strain the pregnancy and birth put on her heart. Edwin was born in November and Mary died the following January.4 She was buried on 15 January 1895 at Calvary Cemetery, Evanston, Illinois.      Julia Leona Quinn was born on 16 October 1875 in Derryribbeen, in the civil parish of Kilmeena, County Mayo, Ireland . She was the youngest of the eight Quinn children. She was born in Ireland and brought to this country by her father when she was between ages 5 and 8. Her death notices and the 1900 census records her place of birth as Chicago, IL. This is an error whether intentional or otherwise. Sometimes it was easier just to say you were born in the United States than deal with the Department of Immigration and Naturalization. Julia's mother died in Ireland before the family immigrated but Julia's birth record clearly states that she was born in Ireland. Her family came here between 1884 and 1888. She was the daughter of Mickey Quinn and Mary Cormack. Julia was baptized in October 1875 at Roman Catholic Church, Kilmeena, Islandeady Parish, County Mayo, Ireland .

John Black Murphy and Julia were married on 17 June 1902 in Saint Vincent de Paul Church, Chicago. By Father P. Byron. Witnesses to the wedding were Jacob McGowan and Agnes Combiths. Following their wedding the couple moved to Colorado where John was the manager for a hotel in Pueblo. Their daughter, Kathryn, was born while they were living here. They moved from Pueblo to Phillipsburg, Kansas where John was the manager of the Bissell Hotel.1

In the census taken on 24 April 1910, Julia was enumerated as the wife of John Black Murphy. At this time the family was living at Phillipsburg, Phillips County, Kansas. She is listed as being born in Illinois and present age is 30. She is not working ouside the home.2

Julia died on 17 July 1915 in Phillipsburg, Kansas, at age 39 from complications of pregnancy. She died five days after giving birth to their second daughter who died the day after her birth.          Elizabeth Mary Corcoran , daughter of James Corcoran and Sarah Barrett, was born on 22 November 1875 in Fairymount, County Roscommon, Ireland; Elizabeth was born after the great famine in Ireland and life in the years following "The Great Hunger" continued to be difficult. Her mother died when she was about two years old. She was raised by her father and older siblings with the help of her grandmother.1 Elizabeth Mary Corcoran was the daughter of James Corcoran and Sarah Barrett. Elizabeth Mary Corcoran was christened on 24 November 1875 at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Fairymount.2 She was called Lizzy by her family and was identified with that name on several records throughout her life such as: census records, her father's death record and her childrens' baptismal records.3 Her mother died when Lizzy was about 4 years of age. She was raised by her father, older siblings and her grandmother.4 Click to view image

Elizabeth Mary Corcoran was present at the death of her father on 1 January 1895. He died on New Year's Day of gangrene of the foot, an illness of six weeks duration. Lizzy was the informant listed on his death certificate.5 Click to view image After her father's death Elizabeth emigrated to America. Her sister, Delia, who had made the trip a few years before, was living in Chicago and was married to Michael Quinn. Their brothers James and Patrick also lived in the city with their families. In Chicago, Illinois.3

She was enumerated as a member of the Henrotin household during the 1900 US Census.3 Elizabeth married Martin Francis Quinn, son of Mickey Quinn and Mary Cormack, on 5 September 1900 at St. Andrew's Church in Chicago. On the day of her wedding, Dr. Hentroin in his medical practice.6 Click to view image

In the census taken on 21 April 1910, Elizabeth was enumerated as the wife of Martin Francis Quinn. At this time the family was living at 1820 Otto St., Chicago, Illinois. She was listed as 35 years old, immigrated in 1894 and was naturalized. Elizabeth was the mother of 6 children all of whom were living. She could read and write and was not working outside the home.7

The census of Chicago, Illinois taken on 12 January 1920 enumerates Elizabeth as the wife of Martin Francis Quinn. She was listed as 47 years old. The date of her arrival into the U.S. was given as 1882 which is different from 1910's 1894 date and we know that in 1895 she was still in Ireland because she is listed on her father's death certificate as being present at the event.8

Elizabeth was enumerated in the 1930 census with Frank Whelan, her son-in-law, on 17 April 1930 at 5235 Leamington Avenue, Chicago, Illinois. Lizzy was listed in this census living with her husband at the home of their daughter, Mary. Her age was 52. Her date of immigration is given as 1894 and she was naturalized.9

Elizabeth Mary Corcoran died on 16 March 1939 at 5105 Winona Street, Chicago, Illinois, at age 63 the day before St. Patrick's day, of complications of cancer of the bowel. Her daughters cared for her in the days before her death. She believed that the water used to boil potatoes had healing properties and this was the only thing she would or could eat during those last days. Her death was a severe blow to her family. Elizabeth's daughters believed the fact that their father lost his pension was a contributing factor for her loss of the will to live. They said that this fact contributed greatly to her death.10 She was buried on 20 March 1939 at Mount Carmel Cemetery, Chicago, Illinois.
