Michael Joseph Connolly (M) b. 09 May 1896, d. 20 Oct 1996
Reference=90
Michael Joseph Connolly was born on 9 May 1896 at Easky, Fortland, County Sligo, Ireland; His parents were Andrew and Sarah (O'Brien) Connolly.
Michael was a carpenter or more specifically a cabinetmaker. He learned his trade in Galway City as a teenager and continued on in Dublin several years later. He was living in Dublin before coming to the US.1
Michael stood on a bridge over the Liffey River in Dublin on the night the Four Courts Building burned. He watched with his father as the recorded history of Ireland was destroyed by fire. Little did he know then that his niece not yet born would be haunted by that night's tradgedy as she endevored to piece together the family history of her ancestors from Mayo and Roscommon and his from Sligo.
Michael Joseph Connolly was found on a passenger list aboard the SS Celtic which sailed from at Liverpool, England on 7 April 1923. Passenger lists contained some basic information about the traveler. Michael gave the following information about himself. The relative in Ireland he chose to list was his Uncle Thomas O'Brien who was living in Lara, Screen, County Sligo. Michael's place of residence upon leaving Ireland was Dublin and his occupation was listed as carpenter. He could read and write English. He was a citizen of Great Britain. His contact in America was his Uncle, Michael Connolly who was living at 667 Gary Place Chicago, Illinois. Michael did not have a ticket from New York to his final destination which was Chicago, but had at least $50.00 in his possession. He was uncertain as to the length of time he was going to be in the U.S. His discription on the manifest was that of a man 5'8" tall, having a fresh complexion with brown eyes and brown hair..2
The ship arrivied at the Port of New York on 16 April 1923.3
Michael returned to Ireland to sell his house. In 1926 A diary of this adventure is held by Maureen Connolly, his daughter.1
During the depression of the 1930's when construction jobs were scarce, he worked in Hollywood, California building sets for motion pictures. In Chicago, he helped to build the Aladdin's Castle attraction at Riverview Park. Michael belonged to Carpenter's Union #1 in Chicago.
On 24 September 1936 Michael married Elizabeth Frances Quinn, daughter of Martin Francis Quinn and Elizabeth Mary Corcoran, at St. Cornelius' Church, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.
Michael lived to be 100 years old and saw the world go from the days of the horse and buggy to space shuttles and microwave ovens. Even though he left Ireland shortly after the 1921 revolution he never stopped considering himself, Irish and was very active in politics of that country for most of his life. Michael Joseph Connolly died on 20 October 1996 at St. Benedict's Home, Niles, Illinois, at age 100.4
He was buried on 23 October 1996 at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Hillside, Illinois.4

Appears on charts: Pedigree for Ursula Cecilia Quinn Descendant Chart for Francis Barrett
Reference=IERosc
Sarah's date of birth is estimated to be on 23 October 1835, in Fairymount, Tibohine Parish, County Roscommon, Ireland . As was usual at that time in Ireland, infants were baptized two days after birth, so Sarah's date of birth was likely to have been two days prior to her recorded baptismal date.1
She was the daughter of Francis Barrett and Mary Dyer.1
Sarah Barrett was baptized on 25 October 1835 at the at the Roman Catholic Catholic Church in, Loughglynn.1
Sarah Barrett lived through The Great Famine. Between 1845 and 1850 the country of Ireland suffered an horrific famine caused by the decimation of the potato crop. From the introduction of the potato into Ireland by Sir Walter Raleigh in 1589, it had become more than just a staple in the Irish diet. It comprised almost their entire diet. Because they had little land for their own personal use, the farmers grew crops for their family's consumption that would yield the most fruit in the smallest space. The potato proved to be most efficient at doing just that. An adult male would consume twelve to fourteen pounds of potatoes in a single day. In 1845, the first year that the blight was found on the potatoes, almost the entire crop was ruined. Not only the potatoes in the field were effected but also those already harvested and in storage. For the next five years all or most of the crop was effected. The Irish were not allowed to hunt or fish because the lakes, streams, coastline and forests were the property of the Crown and the punishment for poaching was imprisonment or death. With their chief source of nourishment gone the people starved. They died by the thousands from starvation and the illnesses caused by it. Millions of people died or were forced to emigrated from the land of their birth. Most went to England, Canada, Australia and the United States. By the time the famine was over Ireland had lost half of its population of 8 million.2
On 2 February 1854 Sarah married James Corcoran, son of Patrick Corcoran and Bridget Kelley, at the same church where they were both baptized. James was a farmer. He and his brothers and their father farmed land in Fairymount.3
Sarah and James' first child was named Mary. Because of the Irish practice of Baptizing infants on the second day of life Mary is assumed to have been born on 3 October 1855. She was baptized on the 5th of October in Loughglynn at the same church where her parents were married.4
Her Sarah and James' daughter, Katie, was baptized on 14 September 1856 also in Loughglynn.5
It was a custom in Irish families to name a child after one who had recently died. Because James and Sarah's third child was also named Mary. It is assumed that Their first daughter died between the birth of their second daughter, Katie, and the third, whom they also named Mary.5
She was baptized on 8 August 1858 in Loughglynn.6
James and Sarah's daughter, Ellen, was baptized on 11 April 1862 but probably also died at a young age most likely between 1868 and 1871 when another daughter was given the name of Ellen.7
Sarah died on 22 November 1877 in Fairymount at age 42. The cause of her death is listed as "apoplexy". This was the term used for a stroke. The length of illness was one day. Because she was so young and died so quickly her death must have been quite a shock to her family.8

James Corcoran was born on 2 August 1825 in Fairymount, County Roscommon, Ireland. James' date of birth is assumed because of the Irish practice of Baptizing infants on their second day of life.2,3,1
He was the son of Patrick Corcoran and Bridget Kelley.4,5,1,6
James Corcoran was baptized on 4 August 1825 at the Catholic Church, in Loughglynn. Today this church is called Our Lady of Good Counsel. The family attended this church until Sacred Heart Church opened on Christmas Day 18__ in their townland of Fairymount.7
The Latin derivitive of his name, Jacobum Corkeran was written in the Baptismal record book..1
James Corcoran lived through The Great Famine. Millions of people died or were forced to emigrated from the land of their birth. Most went to England, Canada, Australia and the United States. By the time the famine was over Ireland had lost half of its population of 8 million.8
On 2 February 1854 James married Sarah Barrett, daughter of Francis Barrett and Mary Dyer, at the same church where they were both baptized. James was a farmer. He and his brothers and their father farmed land in Fairymount.9
The Ballaghaderreen webpage recounts, "Fairymount Hill is the highest point in Co. Roscommon. A mound covered with earth on the summit is very possibly a passage grave. At 586 ft. Fairymount Hill commands a great view of the surrounding country and would have made a natural defence. Two large interlinked hill-forts enclose the top of the hill and possibly date from the Iron Age. Such sites were almost certainly tribal. The chief and his followers occupied the hill-fort as a palace in time of place. However, all the tribesmen and their cattle could be accommodated within its defences in time of danger."10
James and Sarah's first child was named Mary. Because of the Irish practice of Baptizing infants on the second day of life Mary is assumed to have been born on 3 October 1855. She was baptized on the 5th of October in Loughglynn at the same church where her parents were married.11
His James and Sarah's daughter, Katie, was baptized on 14 September 1856 also in Loughglynn.12
Between 1848 and 1864, all of the land of Ireland was surveyed for the purpose of establishing the amount of local tax to be paid by each landholder or leaseholder. For County Roscommon the survey was conducted in 1857 and 1858. The Corcoran families of Fairymount leased land from the Rt. Hon & Rev Lord John De Freyne whose Estates were in Frenchpark.. James Corcoran was listed living in Mullaghnashee (Gaelic for Fairymount), the civil parish of Tibohine, County Roscommon. His holdings included a house with 17 acres and 34 perches of land. The value of the land was placed at 10 £ 15s; the value of the buildings, 1£, with the total value being 11£ 15s..13
It was a custom in Irish families to name a child after one who had recently died. Because James and Sarah's third child was also named Mary. It is assumed that Their first daughter died between the birth of their second daughter, Katie, and the third, whom they also named Mary.12
She was baptized on 8 August 1858 in Loughglynn.14
James and Sarah's daughter, Ellen, was baptized on 11 April 1862 but probably also died at a young age most likely between 1868 and 1871 when another daughter was given the name of Ellen.15
His wife Sarah died on 22 November 1877 at Fairymount, Tibohine Parish, County Roscommon, Ireland , at age 42. The cause of her death is listed as "apoplexy". This was the term used for a stroke. The length of illness was one day. Because she was so young and died so quickly her death must have been quite a shock to her family.16
James Corcoran died on 1 January 1895 at home. The cause of his death was listed as gangrene of the foot, an illness of six weeks duration.17
A family story told by Ursula (Quinn) Haley was that her mother, James' daughter, Elizabeth said her last glimpse of Ireland and her father was as she watched from the rail of the ship as it left Ireland for America. She waved to her father on the shore until she couldn't see him anymore. This story was not accurate. Elizabeth Corcoran, also known as Lizzy, signed her father's death record. That being true he could not have accompanied her to the ship when she left Ireland.
