John Quinn was born in Ireland. Probably in County Mayo around the vacinity of Carrha between Castlebar and Westport.
He was the son of (?) Quinn.
His wife's name is unknown.
He is thought to have died in Derryribbeen and is most likely buried in Islandeady or Kilmeena parish.
This individual's name is believed to be John because of information provided by Herbert Keane of Derryribeen, Mayo, Ireland. Herbert's grandfather knew the Quinns and the other people who lived in the settlement. Herbert remembered walking in the area as a child with his grandfather who pointed out where everyone lived. At the time the houses had fallen into disrepair but the foundations and some walls still remained. He also remembered hearing the name of the "Old Father" as John. Michael Quinn (Mickey) was John's son. He also had at least one more son named, Jack and a daughter, Margaret. (See letter from James Cusack.).
John Quinn Herbert also said that the land in this area was good agricultural land and was confiscated by the British. The Irish were relocated and some emigrated to America on the free emigration provided by the British in lieu of payment for the land. Mickey and his eight children took advantage of this and went to America, according to Herbert. By the time Mickey and his children emigrated to America, his father, John, was dead. Herbert also said that the only one of the Quinns to ever return was Michael, Mickey's, son. He was thought to be very wealthy when he returned for a visit to his homeland.
He This information was obtained in May of 1995 on a trip to Ireland by Peggy Haley and Betty Patterson. The homes of the settlement no longer stand but Herbert Keane pointed out the spot that was the Quinn homestead. The home of James Cusack, National Teacher was just across the road.
