Honor McCormack was born in Cummer, Islandeady Parish, County Mayo, Ireland . Her date of birth is in question, but it is thought to be 26 June 1871.1 She was the daughter of Patrick Cormack (McCormack) and Mary Joyce. Honor McCormack was baptized at the Roman Catholic Church in Islandeady on 28 June 1871. The birth date on the Civil Registry is 11 July 1871. This date differs with the birthdate on the Baptismal record which is actually earlier than the Civil Registry date and most likely more accurate. Her godparents were Martin McCormack and Bridget McCormack. It was not uncommon to register the birth of a child quite a while after the birth took place. From the time of The Great Famine, when so many children died soon after birth, Baptism was much more important to the family than registering the birth and was usually done within a day or two of birth by the Parish Priest. The Civil Registrar's office was most likely in Westport so who ever was the first one to go that way registered the family events. Dates after the fact were not as accurate. So it is an assumption that the baptismal date is accurate and her birth would have been a day or two earlier.2,3 Throughout her life, Honor McCormack was also known as Nora. Honor married Emil Hoffman.
