He was the son of Thomas Haley and Mary Ann Burns. Thomas attended Brantana School in Chicago as a child and was a classmate of Herman Roth who became his lifelong friend. "The lots for this house were purchased by Aunt Mae several years earlier from a salesman that went door to door in their neighborhood. She borrowed $1.00 from her mother and paid the remainder in $1.00 per week installments. - (Catherine Zelinski 1994). In 1916 the family moved to the new house they had built at 5255 N. Leamington Avenue, Forest Glen area of Chicago, Illinois. They lived just down the street from the Quinn family. Ursula Quinn married Tom and Mary's son, Thomas.

The census of at Chicago, Illinois taken on 13 January 1920 enumerates Thomas as the head of a household consisting of his wife Mary and their Sons: Thomas, Rowan, Edward and Walter. Thomas was 33 years old and employed as a line up man for a printer office. He had a mortgage on his home.5 Tom and Mae moved to 5227 Berteau Ave. about 1925. Their home on Leamington was rented to Mae's sister, Ruby and her husband Stuart Keenan until it was sold. There was said to have been hard feelings at the time of the sale because Ruby and Stuart were not aware that Mae and Tom were planning to sell the house. Nicholas Rowan, Mae's father, was living with Ruby and Stuart at the time. (Catherine Zelinski - 1994).

Mary Geraldine Rowan was born on 30 March 1887 at Norton Mills, Vermont; but because no record was found in the town ledgers for Mary or her brother, John, they may not have been born in Vermont as family history suggests. It was a common practice in Vermont at that time for women to return to their parent's homes in Canada for the birth of their children. Husbands who were loggers were usually gone for long periods of time leaving their wives alone. They usually remained with their families for several months until mother and baby were strong enough to travel. At the time this area of Vermont was thought to be part of Canada but after WWI the border was resurveyed and found to run directly through the town of Norton Mills. Residents were given the option of living in the US or Canada. Catherine and Nicholas Rowan with their two children eventually moved to Chicago, Illinois. She was the daughter of Nicholas John Rowan and Catherine Davidson.

Mary was enumerated with Nicholas John Rowan, her father in the census taken on 4 June 1900 at 5302 Peoria, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois . She was 13 years old and was attending school.1

On 1 June 1908 Mary and Thomas Francis Haley Sr obtained a marriage license at Office of the Clerk of Cook County, Chicago, Illinois.2 Mary Geraldine Rowan married Thomas Francis Haley Sr, son of Thomas Haley and Mary Ann Burns, on 6 June 1908 at Visitation Church, Chicago. In the census taken on 21 April 1910, Mary was enumerated as the wife of Thomas Francis Haley Sr. At this time the family was living at Seminary Avenue, Chicago, Illinois. She was listed as 23 years old, married for 2 years and was not working outside the home.4

The census of Chicago, Illinois taken on 13 January 1920 enumerates Mary as the wife of Thomas Francis Haley Sr. She was 32 years old and not working out side the home.5

Mary was enumerated in the 7 April 1930 U. S. Census taken at 5227 Berteau Avenue, Chicago, Illinois as the wife of Thomas Francis Haley Sr. She was 43 years old and not working outside the home..6

Mary died on 23 November 1970 at 5539 N. Mason Avenue, Chicago at age 83. She was buried on 27 November 1970 at Maryhill Cemetery, Niles, Illinois.
