Her sister, Elizabeth, also entered the same convent. Elizabeth was asked to leave the Order because of illness; she had epilepsy. Ellen was asked to leave with her sister. IN 1902, after leaving the convent, the Corcoran sisters emigrated to the US. Ellen lived for a short while with her brother, probably James, in Chicago, Illinois before entering the Convent of the Sisters of St. Joseph in LaGrange, Illinois.3 1903 She took her vows and received the name of Sister Mary St. John the Evangelist. She was an educator and taught Latin to the novices at the LaGrange motherhouse. In 1910 she said her final vows. 1912 at the request of the Servite fathers who were looking for teachers for their school in Ladysmith, Wisconsin, Sister Mary St. John the Evangelist and four of her fellow sisters left the Sisters of St. Joseph and started the American branch of the Servants of Mary known as the Servites. Ellen kept the name of Sister Mary Evangelist but dropped the St. John. The school they started remains a vital part of Ladysmith today.

The census of East 2nd Street, Ladysmith, Rusk Co., Wisconsin taken on 21 January 1920 enumerates Sister Mary Evangelist Corcoran (Ellen) as a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Convent.
