Two Passaic class monitors and the
casemated ironclad Keokuk, stripped for action and ready to go into
action against Fort Sumter and the rest of the defenses at Charleston in
September 1863. The Monitors and the Keokuk were badly handled by
the forts in this action. The New Ironsides was also involved but
her draft prevented her from getting close enough to the forts to be
effective.
