The USS Choctaw. Commissioned 23 March
1863. Converted from a merchant steamer. The Choctaw was armored by
1" of iron armor over 1" of rubber, an experiment that didn't work, as the
rubber rotted and was useless. The Choctaw took part in the attack
and capture of Haynes Bluff, and was later part of the ill-fated Red River
Expedition.
