The USS Hunchback, was one of a group
of ex-ferryboats acquired by the U.S.Navy early in the war. They were
double-ended shallow draft sidewheel boats, well suited for the narrow,
shallow waterways all along the Atlantic Coast. In addition, their decks
were already re-inforced and were able to carry heavy cannon without too
much modification. The Hunchback served in various areas of North Carolina
and the James River, Virginia.
