The Milwaukeeclass monitors were designed by Eads, laid down in 1862 and commissioned between May and August 1864. These monitors carried an Ericsson turret aft and the Eads turret forward. The Eads turret was unique, in that the gun deck was lowered into the hull for reloading and all functions were steam assisted, requiring a much smaller crew for the turret.
