The CSS Richmond, was laid down at Norfolk in 1862, and launched in May of that year. Due to the Peninsula campaign and the imminent loss of Norfolk, she was towed to Richmond for completion. The Richmond was also known as the Virginia II or Young Virginia for a time. The Richmond supported the wooden gunboats on the James River during their constant skirmishing with Union forces until joined by the Fredricksburg and Virginia II to form a powerful ironclad squadron on the James River. They were mostly confined to patrolling the river above thier obstructions, while the Union squadron patrolled their section of the James below their obstructions. The standoff continued until 1864, when the Confederate ships attemped a breakout with the aim of destroying Grant's supply base at City Point. During the attempt, the Richmond and the Virginia II ran aground at Trent's Reach, and endured several hours of bombardment from the Union batteries until the tide changed and they were able to get afloat and retreat. All the James River ironclads were blown up upon the fall of Richmond, 4 Apr 1865.
