
Originally named Stromboli renamed Spuytin Duyvil in November 1864. The Spuytin Duyvil (Spitting Devil) served with the James River Squadron and took part in the Trent's Reach battle. A wooden, low freeboard, flush deck vessel, the Spuytin Duyvil had ballast tanks to increase it's draft and protection. She had a retractable spar torpedo in the bow, but was slow and unwieldy.

The David was a class of semi submersible torpedo boats built in Charleston S.C. A David attacked the USS New Ironsides on the night of 5 October 1863, causing moderate damage, but not enough to sink or disable the ship. Davids also attacked the USS Wabash off Charleston 18 April 1864, and the USS Memphis in North Edisto River on 6 March 1864.

The Squib was one of four torpedo boats (others were Hornet, Wasp and Scorpion) All four of the boats took part in the battle of Trent's Reach, 24 January 1865, where the Scorpion was damaged and captured by the Union Navy
