The CSS VirginiaII, was one of four
casemated ironclads built at Richmond after the loss of the CSS
Virginia (Merrimac). These ironclads mostly patrolled the James River
above the Confederate and Union obstructions, but were involved late in
the war in an abortive attempt to break out and attack the Union supply
base at City Point, VA. All the James River ironclads were blown up upon
the fall of Richmond, 4 Apr 1865.
