Cari studenti e amici,

Fall 2008 will mark the debut of an exciting new language course at Scottsdale Community College: Italian 265, Advanced Italian, 3 credits.

Italian 265 will comprise an optimum format:  the study of contemporary Italian literature, a lively discussion format and the chance for students to use and polish their conversational skills.    We will read passages of preeminent Italian writers such as Manzoni, Verga, Svevo, Salgari, De Amicis, Pirandello and others; insightful writers who captured the Italian spirit and defined Italian culture, especially in the pre and post Italy unification eras.

Like all truly great writers, their works are surprisingly simple to read, but the diversity of their ideas and their insight into the human condition make their stories an ideal forum for the study of the Italian language.

I am personally reaching out to the community of “appassionati” with an acknowledged interest in Italian culture; individuals whose language abilities I know make them ideal candidates for enrollment in the new course.

Italian 265 will meet on Monday and Wednesday, 1:30 to 2:45 on the main SCC campus, with classes beginning on Monday, August 25.     I hope you will join us in launching this new Italian course.  I can promise you an exciting and fulfilling learning experience, and a whole new level of achievement in Italian language skills.

Cordialmente,

Sirio Calogero
