Research
shows the dramatic effect that writing ability has on a student’s overall
learning experience and growth. Helping students to become effective
communicators in the area of writing is a school wide goal at Scherkenbach
ES. We are providing students in all grade levels with consistent practice
and instruction in writing by implementing these best practices.

Teaching
and use of Writing Traits to promote an understanding of the elements of
good writing.

School wide
writing rubric for teachers, students and parents to use as
an assessment and improvement tool.

Monthly
writing prompts that encourage writing in various content areas and
familiarize students with formats and language.

Follow-up sessions with discussions and examinations of the writing rubric to polish writing.

Integrating writing in all areas of the curriculum by using science
logs, math journals, and reading response logs.

Using
a writing workshop format where students and teachers work together to
create drafts, revise, edit and publish.
