BY DARYL JAMES
The children of George Heber James always have a hard time thinking of things to give their father on his birthday. He either has it or doesn't want it. For his 76th or 77th birthday in 1986 or 87, however, his children decided to take no chances. They knew his favorite food was lobster, so they decided to splurge and take him and their mother to the best lobster restaurant in the western United States--which to their knowledge was a little cafe in San Diego, Calif. After Heber agreed to the idea, Jo made reservations at a nice hotel in San Diego and at the designated restaurant. They acquired a van and drove from Phoenix to the coast together. Gerald, Judi, Jeanne, Joyce and Jo and their spouses all made the trip (everyone except Janet). Everything went smoothly until the group arrived at the designated restaurant in San Diego and Heber saw the menu. He decided the lobster was too expensive and ordered chicken instead. “No lobster is worth that much money,” he said.
