General history
VARIOUS AUTHORS
Samuel Lathrop was born about 1623 in London to John Lathrop and Hannah Howse. His parents had moved to London that year and become members of the First Independent Church of London in the Southwark section of the city. Samuel's father became the second pastor of the church in 1624. Meeting separate from the Church of England brought persecution from the government upon the Lothrops and other members of their church. They met in various private homes at odd hours to avoid arrest and persecution. Finally, on April 22, 1632, when Samuel was about 9, his father and 42 members of the congregation were arrested and put in prison. While John Lothrop was in prison, "a fatal sickness was preying upon his wife, and bringing her fast toward her end." John asked William Laud, the Bishop of London at the time, for permission to visit his wife before she died. Laud consented on the condition that John promise to return to prison afterward. So Samuel's father visited the family and gave Hannah a blessing. When she died, Samuel and his six siblings, ranging in age from 7 to 20, were left with no one to care for them. Samuel's father was released from prison April 24, 1634, on the condition that he leave the country and never return. So after making preparations, he sailed with his family to Boston, Massachusetts, on the ship Griffin. They arrived September 18, 1634. Samuel ended up in Norwich, Connecticut where he is considered one of the founding fathers. He was a builder and later a farmer and for a while a "constable," "townsman" and judge. Samuel is reported in 1643 as one of five Lothrops at Barnstable liable to bear arms. One historian writes this about Judge Samuel Lathrop: "Samuel, born in England, came with his father to Scituate in 1634, and thence to Barnstable, where he married, Nov 28, 1644, Elizabeth Scudder, who had been dismissed from the church in Boston Nov 10, 1644, to remove her church relation to that in Barnstable. She is reported in Savage as a sister to that John Scudder who was in Barnstable in 1640. Samuel had made the acquaintance of Miss Scudder in Boston, where he commenced his business life as a house builder, afterwards combining with his extensive farming operations. Their marriage was recorded by his father on the Barnstable Church Register as follows: 'My son Samuel & Elizabeth Scudder Marryed at my house by Mr Freeman Nov 28, 1644.'" Samuel and Elizabeth were both about 21 at the time of their marriage. They settled in Barnstable, where their house stood next to that of John Scudder. Between 1645 and 1669 they had 10 children. In 1648 Samuel and Elizabeth moved to New London, Connecticut, then called Pequot. Israel (or Iferell), through whom the Palmers are descended, was born in October 1659, in Norwich, New London. Samuel is mentioned in two letters from Governor Winthrop to his son at Pequot. In one letter, dated Aug 14, 1648, on the subject of obtaining a minister for the settlement, he writes, "Your neighbour Lothrop came not at me (as I expected) to advise about it," etc. Samuel and Elizabeth's house lot in the new plantation was the third in order from that of John Winthrop Jr. Esq., and Samuel was one of the first 18 assigned lands on the east side of the "great river" of Pequot. For these the lots were drawn on Jan. 17 and 31 in 1648 or 1649. Samuel and Elizabeth both died in 1700, Samuel in Connecticut and Elizabeth in Massachusetts. Both were about 77.
