Hello.
I have been researching and gathering material on the Schallau family for
many years, though not on anything like a constant basis. My time on
family history has been catch-as-catch-can, since I am not yet retired
and I am still working as a reference librarian for the Chandler, Arizona, Public Library
System. I'm the grandson of Joseph C. Schallau (who at some point began using "Schallan" instead of "Schallau," for reasons no one in my branch of the family can now remember).
My grandfather was the sixth child of John Henry and Catherine Maria Schallau, and the last to be born in Germany. I was born in Dubuque, Iowa, and grew up in Phoenix, attending Arizona State University for my bachelor's degree and the University of Arizona for my master's. My wife Linda (also a librarian) and I live in Phoenix and have one son, Matthew "Mats" Schallan.
In an earlier career, I spent 10 years as an
editor of magazines covering the technical side of computers and digital
electronics. In this position, I had to ensure that the printed product was
readable and as free of error as possible. I hope to bring my
background both as an editor and as a librarian to bear on the
quality of this website.
