The Düppel Storm Cross. This Prussian
military decoration was awarded to the soldiers who took part in
the storming of the great Danish fortress of Düppel in the
war between the German states and the Kingdom of Denmark in
1864. The portrait on the medal is that of King William I of Prussia,
who was later proclaimed the first German kaiser (emperor) in
1871, when all the German states except Austria were unified
under Prussian leadership.
