Liberty Township
Schallaw, Henry. Wf. Rosie; ch. Irvin J., Matha, Alice, Bibianna, Cora and
Rita,
P. O. Sutherland, R. 2.
O. 160 ac., sec. 9; R. 160 ac, sec. 9. (20.)
In the 1920s several commercial publishers issued directories to farmers in counties throughout Iowa. This entry for Henry Schallau was transcribed from the original directory by Arlene Steffen, a researcher affiliated with the O'Brien County section of the Iowa GenWeb Project.
All of us who bear the Schallau name (or in my case, a variation of it) are used to having it misspelled, and this 1924 directory uses an interesting version. I've seen "Schalow" and "Schalou" but not this. Note also the misspellings of Martha's and Bibiana's names.
The last line in the directory entry indicates that Henry owned
160 acres in Section 9 of Liberty Township, rented another 160
acres in the same section, and had lived in O'Brien County for 20
years. -- Joseph B. Schallan
(grandnephew of Henry Schallau)
