General Meade Society of Philadelphia


The General Meade Society of Philadelphia is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the memory of Major General George Gordon Meade, commander of the Army General George Gordon Meadeof the Potomac and architect of the Union victory at Gettysburg. The Society was founded by General Meade enthusiasts who gather annually on December 31st to celebrate the anniversary of the general's birth. The society currently boasts hundreds of members throughout the country, all of whom share a common interest in General Meade's multifaceted life and career.

Since its inception, the General Meade Society has undertaken a number of worthwhile activities in support of its mission to promote the distinguished general. Among these are tours of Meade-related sites in Philadelphia, sponsorship of an address by noted Civil War historian Dr. Richard Sauers, a wreath-laying ceremony at the Meade equestrian statue on Cemetery Hill at Gettysburg, and an annual birthday commemoration at his gravesite in Philadelphia's historic Laurel Hill Cemetery. The General Meade Society is a proactive organization that meets regularly to discuss the general's role in the Civil War and other related topics. The society's meetings are held on the second Thursday of every month at 7:30 p.m.

Membership in the Meade Society is open to all who value patriotism and are devoted to history. Dues are $10.00 per year for individuals, $20.00 for families, and $5.00 for students. The General Meade Society also has available for sale several items of interest to Meade enthusiasts, including: Meade buttons ($2.00 ea.), mugs ($5.00 ea.), portraits ($1.75 ea.), framed portraits ($5.00) and busts of the venerable general ($25.00 ea.).
