Clara
(Swanson) Dahl, Lauren's grandmother, had four boys - Carl, Clarence, Lawrence
and Einar - and she raised them during hard times, crossing the ocean at least
twice (on the Mauritania and the Lusitania, no less!) and living in a soddy and
farming in Nebraska. She also sewed, made lace, and - of course - cooked. I
have one of her handmade traveling dresses - made of good, strong fabric that
looks as new today as it did back in the early, early 1900s. This is one of her
recipes, sent to me by Aunt Edna Dahl, Lawrence's wife.
