Devil's Tower, Wyoming. You will remember it from the movie 'Close
encounter of the third kind'.

The
indian legend says that a group of girls were attacked by a giant bear and
they too refuge on the top of the mountain. The bear then left big marks
with his claws. The girls are still there, in the form of seven stars in
the sky (the pleiades). |
| In reality, the tower is the solidified
remains of the inside of a volcano (the magma). Through the ages, the
outside landscape was completely eroded and the tower now stands alone. |
