Also not about Cracker Jack collecting, this non-fiction bestseller, The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair That Changed America by Erik Larson, centers around the creation of the World Columbian Exposition of 1893, where legend has it that the precursor to Cracker Jack was first sold. (Cracker Jack is mentioned as one of the fair's "firsts" on page 5, though not specifically documented.) Interwoven in the story of the Exposition is the tale of another first: America's first serial murderer. There's a political assassination included for good measure. Larson shows us just how phenomenal the Columbian Exposition was. It is hard to imagine that the Rueckheim Brothers, living and doing business in Chicago at the time, would not have participated as vendors on the Midway (another Exposition creation). Learning how much work went into the amazing construction and visualzing the amazing results make us wish that most of the wonderful buildings had not been destroyed after the Exposition closed. Highly recommended! See more information on the book and readers' reviews at Amazon.com by clicking above.
