This paper "Movie Cartoons" double flip book is approximately 1" x 2 1/8"and has 15 pages plus the cover, with a staple in the middle. It was supplied by William Shaland of New York, importer, around the late 1930's and is marked "Made in Japan." By holding the flip book (or thumb book) at the staple with the thumb and forefinger of one hand and using the thumb of the other hand to flip the black and white pages quickly from front to back, the illusion of a moving picture is created--just as still frames of movie film projected one after the other in rapid sucession create animation.
If the pages at the end of the book with the singing woman are flipped, a cartoon "movie" is seen of this multitalented lady dancing around.
This is a double flip book because if the book is flipped top to bottom so that the elephant head is at the top, the cartoon is an animation of a man, dog, and elephant.
