Cracker Jack Felt Patches

I.D. 1383 Felt Patches - Black Print

This series of self-adhesive felt patch stickers is from 1974. The various sayings and illustrations may be found on each of the four colors shown: pink, green, yellow, and blue. Each "Felt Patch" is approximately 1 5/16" square, and has the prize number, I.D. 1383, and the "Cracker Jack" identification on the back. The backs of some patches are printed in black. Others have green print on the back, with a warning not to stick them on walls and furniture and a message that dry cleaning removes the adhesive and "Chicago, IL." It could be that the ones with the warnings were released after those with no warning, in response to complaints, but this is just a guess.

Felt Patches - Colored Print

The most common patches have black print on the felt, but patches also can be found with red, green, or blue print. In addition to the color combinations shown above, there are pink patches with red print and blue patches with red print. It is likely that blue on yellow, green on pink, and green on blue ones also exist. Most of the felt patches with colored ink print seem to have backings with black print and no warning, but some are green or white print with a warning.

There have been 35 different patches identified in this series. Though this seems an odd number of prizes for a series, there is a clue that this is an accurate number. Another series of felt patches, Box Series #23, was released in the 1980's and is practically identical to the I.D. 1383 series (except the patches are a little thinner and with different sayings). The backs of the #23 series indicate that there are 35 in that set: each prize in Box Series #23 is identified as "No. __ of 35." So 35 prizes in the I.D. 1383 series is not so unlikely, then.

The #23 series is much more rare than the I.D. 1383 series. Examples in the #23 series have been found with black, red, and blue print. It may be that set also has patches with green print, but none have been reported.
