This 1 5/16" square wiggle picture is from a 1984 series of fifteen Cracker Jack prizes featuring Olympics sports of the 1984 Games. Wiggle pictures (also called action cards, to-and-fro cards, flickers, motion cards, and lenticulars) have a special type of clear plastic covering over a paper backing creating images which appear to move or change when the cards are tilted back and forth. The number of animation sequences can vary; with the Cracker Jack Olympic cards, three views are used to create the motion effect.
The sports featured in the set, in prize number order, are men's archery, men's basketball, men's cycling, women's diving, equestrian show jumping, women's gymnastics, men's hockey, men's soccer, women's track & field, men's swimming, women's tennis, men's track & field, women's volleyball, men's weightlifting, and men's wrestling.
The cards were released as two different series. With the set distributed before the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympics, the backs of the cards gave brief general history about the particular events with "B Series # 7-" followed by the number of the prize number of the particular prize; for example, "B Series # 7-10" for men's swimming.
A second set of the wiggle pictures was released after the Los Angeles Games, with an additional "084" following the series and prize number. Each card is marked "Cracker Jack," as are those of the first set. Some of the second set may have slightly different shades of color. (Examples of the men's swimming have a swimmer with brown hair in the first set and with blond hair in the second series.)
But more noticeable, the printing on the back of the second series is smaller, some titles are different ("Equestrian Show Jumping" became "Equestrian Events"), and the narrative has specific references to USA participation in 1984 featured events and medals won.
There is one notable exception: the only Winter Olympics event to be featured, hockey, does not have any mention of the 1984 results; in fact, it says exactly the same thing as the first hockey card. This is probably because the "084" series was prepared and released after the Summer Games but before the Winter Games were held and results known.
Many USA gold and silver medals were won in the Summer events featured. It is likely that the sports were chosen based on predictions of USA's success in those particular events.
The action cards were created by the Optigraphics Corporation of Arlington, Texas.
