The Claypoole/Claypool/Claypole family has a long and distinguished history. Through the marriage, in 1586,of Adam Claypool to Dorothy, the daughter of Robert Wingfield of Upton, there is a connection to the royal family. Two generations later, Adam's grandson John married the daughter of Oliver Cromwell, Lord Protector of England. He and several of his brothers fought in the English Civil War. My husband and I have been to Northborough and seen the elegant manor house which was their home for many years and the Church of St. Andrew where many of them are buried (including the wife of Oliver Cromwell, John's mother-in-law).

I have been researching diligently to determine whether my husband's line traces to the
grandson of James 1634-1687 or the grandson of Norton c1640-1688. I have heard arguments
in both directions, some leaning one way and some the other. The two men lived within a few
miles of each other and were born with a very few years of each other. So far, I have not seen any
proof that settles my mind for certain. The search continues.
