Jennifer Wins National
Qualifier at Encnio Velodrome.
With a
full NRC racing schedule, squeezing in enough track training to
qualify for nationals can be a difficult task. I was really nervous
to compete at the Encino national qualifier because I had missed the
qualifier in San Diego and will be out of town for the Carson
qualifier next weekend. This past weekend reminded me that I'm in
peak competition form. I won the 3K pursuit 9 seconds over the
competition. I was happy that I qualified and winning was icing on
the cake.
I took
my chances in the match sprint and managed to finish third to also
qualify for sprint events. I am no match sprinter but hope I can be
part of a great team sprint.
This month I
will be racing in Charlotte for the Presbyterian Hospital Twilight
Criterium and Hanes park, the weekend of the 8th and 9th.
After that I will be heading out to Masters Nationals in Colorado
Springs to compete in the Team Pursuit and the Points race, should
be a good time. Thanks for everyone’s support.
See you
on the road!

Jenn podiums
at the San Pedro Grand Prix - June 21.
No doubt, the season
is in full swing. I finished up Speedweek and the Tulsa Tough and now home for
a bit before heading out East again for more crits. I have been hitting it
steady at the track when I
am home, and recently took 2nd at Master State Championships in the Individual Pursuit
and 3rd in the Madison with my partner Dena Easton. I had a great time at San
Pedro last weekend, following is the race report.
With
over 100 feet if climbing per lap and a 600 meter sprint to the finish, the San
Pedro Grand Prix is considered one of the toughest 1.1 mile criteriums in SoCal.
Over 45 women arrived to the start line the breezy Sunday afternoon. With only
two Vanderkitten riders (Jenn Reither and Jenn Wilson, A.K.A “The Jenn’s) we had
our work cut out for us as we were surrounded by the teams of Helen’s, SDBC, and
La Grange who all brought six riders.
Jenn and I
decided it was a perfect breakaway course for us and spared no time attacking
the field from the gun. With the help of Helen's and a few smaller teams we
were both able to get in a few breaks with small gaps, but nothing seemed to
stick. After several attempts attacking in the head wind I decided to attack on
the 100 foot climb. I rounded the 160 degree turn third in line and made a huge
move and sprinted up the hill, settled in then motored. I heard a girl behind
me say, we have a little gap. I clicked down another gear and continued to
motor on the front and would assess the break later.
Within two
laps our break of 8 gained 20 seconds on the field and it was time to assess the
break. The break included, Pam Schuster (Helens) Jennifer Weinbrecht (B&L)
Coryn Rivera (Pro Man) Kenda Ryan (MS Now) Ann Drackulich (La Grange) Laura
Hines (SC Velo) and Heather Jackson (unattached) and Me, Jenn Reither (Vanderkitten).
The break seemed a little large for my liking, so I heated it up the hill and
into the off camber 170 degree turn 4, but had no luck dropping any riders. At
4 laps to go, I needed to start conserving and consider winning. After sitting
in for 3 laps, I decided to take the final turn hot and on the inside. I ramped
it up and made my move into the final corner but Kendal Ryan came under me for
the inside and Jennifer Weinbrecht came over the top of me on the outside. This
was still a good spot; I was 3rd out of the turn. I stuck on
Jennifer’s wheel for a moment but felt it was too slow and had to go for the
line. There was still 500 meters to the finish and I knew it would be a long
way but I was committed and had to go for it. At 100 meters out I was in 1st,
at 50 meters, I was 2nd, at 25 meters, I was 3rd and had
to gut out the final 25 meters with everything I had to podium. Final Podium
with 1st Coryn Rivera (Proman) 2nd Pam Schuster (Helens) 3rd
Jennifer Reither (Vanderkitten)
Back in the
field Jenn Wilson took 2nd in the field sprint behind Anna Lang (B&L)
for 10th.

Kick Ass start to the 2009 NRC
Jenn places 11th
at the Tour of California Santa Rosa Criterium
February 15, 2009
Since
Sunday evening driving home with my navigator and teammate, Jen Wilson, I have
been overwhelmed with emails, texts, calls and facebook pings with
congratulations and great job regarding my performance at the Tour of California
(ToC)Santa Rosa Crit. I thank all of you who follow my racing and thank you for
your continued support and helping me succeed. For those of you who have asked
for all the juicy details….
Here’s
the recap.
I was invited in mid
February by Team Vanderkitten (VK) to come up and race with them at the ToC
Santa Rosa crit which I accepted. Jen Wilson and I drove up Friday morning in
gloomy skies to Berkeley where the VK team is headquartered. After unloading
bikes and bags, we saddled up for a ride with teammates Leigh Hopkins and Liz
Hatch for a spin on the bay trail. We wrapped up the evening with a team dinner
at V.K. headquarters where we meet the rest of the team, Melissa Sanborne,
Melody Metzger, Virginia Perkins, Mary Moroon, Haley Beann, and Director Jeff
Hopkins. Owners of team VK, Mark Zefeldt and Dave Verrecchia talked to us about
VK while silent owner Jenny Vanderlaag and 2 year son Raycer cooked us up
homemade chili and cornbread for supper. Raycer was super helpful when it came
time to cleaning the dishes. He’s threw them to the floor and they were done.
Saturday
the team blew out the legs at the San Jose crit. As it was the first team race
for several teams there was lots of action from Tibco, Sugar CRM, Proman and
Colavita to name a few. VK raced well and put 3 girls in the top 20, Melissa
Sanborne 14th, Leigh Hopkins 16th and Melody Metzger 20th.
I was stoked to pimp a prime from Proman about ½ way in the race for $100 bucks.
I finished 25th. Saturday night we all headed to the Pyramid Brewery
for beers, burgers and infomercials. I sat with Emma and her husband Matt and
discussed Emma’s work developing the Vanderkitten club team. Proceeds from the
team go directly to support the professional women’s cycling team. Women
helping Women KICK ASS, I love it. Check it out at
www.vanderkitten.com under cycling club.
Sunday was looking
pretty glum as I got up and headed to get my fix of caffeine, sugar and protein
around 8 a.m. Although it was wet, I was excited to race. We arrived to the
race, “walked the lobby” (for the Jerry McQuire fans), geared up in our 2009 VK
kits, warmed up and headed to the line. Of course the skies opened and blessed
us with precipitation before the race started. All 90 of us women sat on the
start line freezing and wet patiently waiting through call ups, the national
anthem and the sponsor’s message before the gun finally fired and we were off.
Being a late to the start I lined a bit further back in the pack than I like,
putting me in poor positioning for the start of a rainy ra ce.
After 5 laps of eating road grit, swallowing rain water and conceding to a wet
chamois, I saw my opportunity to move to the front and made my move. As I made
my move, I notice a break up the road and continued to gas it, changing my
original course of action from getting to the front to now bridging to the
break. Little did I know the next 5 laps would be hell as I chased the break
with everything I had. When I finally latched on to the back of the break the
fans that lined the street erupted in cheers. I spent the rest of the 40
minutes of racing recovering on the back and going with the moves. As I focused
on maneuvering around the thousands of bots dots that lined the course, I barely
noticed a camera man I almost hit, and the pools of water accumulating.
Maneuvering the course was mentally draining, it was getting colder and I could
barely see. Our director, Jeff, communicated for me to get on a wheel. I was so
intent on letting him know I found a good one, I sat up and pointed to Kelly
Benjamin’s butt, whose wheel I was sitting on. I was proud of myself to be on
her wheel as its guaranteed for a strong finish. I was on her wheel through turn
three as I notice Kim Anderson (High Road) leading out Emily Fahlin, and
Meredith Miller (Tibco) leading out her Teammate, Lauren Tamayo. I was there, in
the mix, coming out of turn 4 with 500 meters to the finish the 10 girls in
front of me had some other gear I could not engage, but I managed on through the
finish for 11th place.
Final podium
1st Emily Fahlin- High Road 2nd
Lauren Tamayo - Tibco 3rd Racheal Lloyd- Proman
