Scholarship to Memorialize Dr. Graves

To the former students of Mary Sharp College, Winchester, Tenn., and their descendants:

Six years ago, a few of the former pupils of the college, living in Nashville, Tenn., organized a social club to be known as the Mary Sharp College Club of Nashville, Tenn.   We soon found out there was something needed to be done other than to have a good time.  We have had a neat concrete coping put around the lot in the cemetery at Winchester where Dr. Graves is buried.  Later one of our members said she had asked Dr. Graves to write something of himself and his work which might be preserved in history and that he had replied, "I am going to live in 'the hearts of my pupils.  We realized as the years past, there are fewer and fewer of us left to tell the story and decided to write a book as a memorial to him and to preserve the record of his high ideals of education for women, that libraries as well individuals might possess a copy. The title of the book is “Dr. Z. C. Graves and The Mary Sharp College, 1850-1896.”  Mary Sharp was the first chartered college for higher education for women in the world, and its influence went over the Southland, moulding the lives of women and men (through   their mothers) for true citizenship. The book is, finished, the printing paid for, and we still have 250 copies of it for sale at The Presbyterian Book Store, 711 Church Street, Nashville, Tenn.,  $1.50 Pp.

Realizing that something more must be done to memorialize Dr. Graves and. his work for woman's education we took another step which we feel sure would bring a smile of appreciation and approval to, his face.  We have founded, on his 110th Birth day, April 15th, an endowed scholarship in George Peabody College for Teachers, Nashville, Tenn., to be known as "The late Dr. Z. C. Graves memorial: scholarship; President of Mary Sharp College, Winchester; Tenn., 1850-1896, given by his former pupils. This was the first chartered College for higher education for women in the world, preference being given to a lineal descendant of Dr. Graves or of a former student of Mary Sharp College."

This will be a perpetual memorial, for this statement will be published annually in the Peabody catalogue.  Dr, Graves has a little granddaughter; Martha Harris, granddaughter of Hubert Graves, who may reap the benefit of this scholarship.

We feel that you will desire to give a liberal contribution to this fund; in order to complete its endowment. If you cannot do so now, can you make a subscription to be paid later?  If you cannot, but know of someone who can do so, please pass this information on. Possibly you would like to remember this scholarship in your will. Send all contributions to Mrs. F. B. Dresslar, 1908 Blakemore Avenue, Nashville, Tenn.
